The Associated Press reports Allied forces sustain heavy losses in the Dutch East Indies as battles intensify. Details describe air and ground engagements, with casualties on both sides and strategic setbacks amid ongoing counteroffensives.
Allied forces sank a freighter and wrecked jetties, workshops, and shore batteries during a 35 minute assault on Sabang, the Dutch East Indies stronghold. Mountbatten confirmed the strike and noted Japanese claims of little damage.
A traffic accident in Springfield, Ohio, yesterday killed two men. Frank Leonard Steinmetz, 53, driving a car, collided with a government truck, died. Pedestrian Fred Edward Fischer, 51, was struck and crushed under the truck.

Common Pleas Judge Hector S. Young of Marion county died early today at Mt. Carmel Hospital. He was 55 and had entered the clinic two weeks ago for treatment.
B. S. Millar, land agent for the Ohio Division of Conservation, has been contacting landowners in the Clear Fork valley seeking acreage options for the proposed Clear Fork Lake improvement.
