Northern Ohio observers visiting Logan over the weekend note vast amounts of black berries going to waste on hillside patches. Farmers report large untouched areas with ripe fruit drying on stalks. Several locals say the blackberry crop is among the largest in years for personal use.
Raul Brown on North Market street maintains a premier rose garden with over 250 plants. County extension agent James R. Smoot advised a mild lead arsenate spray to curb stockborers, warning of plant burn if solution is too strong.

Dale Van Curen ten year old son of Mr and Mrs Clarence Van Curen Laurelville sustained a fractured left arm Wednesday afternoon when he slipped and fell while playing in the garage at his home. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
About 450 of Hocking County's 1013 WPA workers face dismissal notices or 403s by Sept 1 under the new federal rule. Workers will be off WPA rolls for 30 days as 18 months continuous employment triggers removal. recertification follows via regular channels with priority to those with larger families.
Jayne Shriner eight year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Judson Shriner 304 North Street sustained a fractured right arm when she slipped from the top of the slide at the Logan municipal swimming pool Wednesday evening. District Attorney Dewey ordered elaborate precautions to guard him from possible gang retaliation as he begins life in fear-shadowed freedom. Davis rose from boyhood in Tannerville New York to wealth and luxury before turning informer and claiming to go straight.
In Culpeper Virginia seven federal prisoners who beat guards and escaped from a bus yesterday remain missing. An all night vigil and wide area search by state troopers federal officers and volunteer possemen found no clues. Heavy fog hindered early morning efforts.

London July 27 AP Scot land Yard held three men for examination and questioned scores as it hunted IRA bombers after a series of blasts. One man died and several injured as Parliament and the British Museum faced intensified security measures and 75 sticks of gelignite were found near Liverpool.
CIO chief John L. Lewis charged Vice President Garner with stirring attacks on labor in Congress. He labeled Garner a "poker playing whisky drinking evil old man" and said he would oppose Garner when he seeks the presidency in 1940. Lewis testified against wage hour law changes.

Covington Indiana July 27 AP Thomas Allen Boys 27 Attica pleaded innocent to murder in perpetration of a felony and heard testimony on the rape slaying of 11 year old Elizabeth Debrickey of Attica. Boys was bound over to Fountain County grand jury for Sept 25 and taken to Pendleton State Reformatory for safekeeping. Elizabeth vanished Friday after a 4 H Club meeting and her body was found buried in a shallow grave.
Velma West is to be returned to the Perry Ohio area after an escape from the Marysville Women’s Reformatory. Superintendent Marguerite Reilley said West is going out of circulation as officers head to Dallas to fetch her, along with two other escapees from June 19. The plan is described as a homecoming.
Velma West and Mary Ellen Richards will be shaved on return to the Ohio reformatory after a month in solitary confinement in Dallas. Supt. Marguerite Reilley said head shaving hurts their pride and is a better punishment than other measures.

A driving rain with thunder and lightning swept over Logan and parts of Hocking County on Wednesday night. The storm toppled some corn and felled tree limbs, but widespread damage was not believed serious.
Work started Thursday on the western gateway several hundred feet west of the state highway barn on U S Route 33. Cement base work will be completed with William Loomis and Son as local contractors holding the contract for both east and west gateway construction.
