In Wooster Ohio on July 24 Stanley Edward Hartshorne two year old son of Rev and Mrs Thomas Hartshorne of Conneaut drowned after slipping into a swimming pool at Lakeland Beach unnoticed. The tragedy units the small family in loss.
Allied forces advanced within about 10 miles of Florence as German defenses along the Arno were drawn back. Fifth and Eight Army units pushed a southern arc around the historic city, capturing Strada with over 60 Germans and seizing Monte Fili to the east as South African forces pressed armor forward amid brisk resistance.
