A Viking program team in Pasadena reports a likely fix for the lander arm jam after tests show a locking pin did not release. If correct, the life-detection sequence remains on schedule while seismometer and comms issues are still under study.
Hocking County Sheriff Paul Hartman and Logan Police Chief James Thompson announce a joint probe into bizarre animal mutilations. Ten cases reported from late May to July 17 involve a llama horses dog chickens cow steer and rabbits with no evidence of harm to people. Injuring animals is a first degree misdemeanor carrying up to six months in prison and a $1000 fine.
Three candidates filed statements of contributions and expenditures with the Hocking County Election Board ahead of the June 8 primary. Tom Myers, Democrat for county sheriff, reported 550.26 in expenditures and 550.26 in contributions including 25 from Charles Orwig and 525.26 from the candidate. John D. Campbell, Democrat for sheriff, listed 441.25 in expenditures and contributions, with 100 from John Campbell and 100 from Susan K. Campbell and 241.25 from the candidate. Heskell Wagoner, Republican for sheriff, showed 147.49 in expenditures and 80 in contributions including 20 from Robert Lilley and 60 in cash from three others.
Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles Registrar Curtis Andrews urged an independent probe into State Auditor Thomas Ferguson's office after a recent audit criticized the motor vehicles bureau. The period covered runs from October 1970 to fall 1973 with backlogs and possible misdirected funds cited. Ferguson promised a follow up audit of the bureau.
The Army will delay choosing GM or Chrysler for the XM1 advanced tank project to study common parts with West Germany. Secretary Hoffmann said a final decision may slip to year end while a September comparison with the Leopard II proceeds.
Thomas Huskey, 31, a rubber factory worker from Cleveland, wins $1,000 a month for life in the Ohio Buckeye 1,000 lottery. He will buy a new dryer and car for his family while continuing to work at General Tire. Other winners include Louis Roberto of Cincinnati and Joseph Mazanetz of Rock Creek.
Ralph Johnston an engineer from Burgess and Niple Ltd Columbus will be in Hocking County Courthouse first floor at 9 a.m. Thursday to meet with West Logan property owners. Owners with questions about assessments for the sewer system may call county commissioners at 385-5195 for an appointment.
A Logan-Horn's Mill Road house was hit by lightning during a severe thunderstorm and burned out, leaving the frame structure uninhabitable. Neighbors reported the strike at about 2 15 a m. and the family was away at the time.
Justice Powell delays an order allowing executions in Georgia Florida and Texas until the Supreme Court can rehear three cases. The high court resumes Oct. 4 after recess.
Alameda and Madera sheriffs seek arrest warrants for Frederick N. Woods James L. Schoenfeld and Richard A. Schoenfeld. The men are described as armed and dangerous in connection with the mass kidnapping of 26 Chowchilla students and their bus driver. Ransom motive suspected.
