Cable Cuts Disrupt Long-Distance Phone Service Nationwide

In Logan and across Ohio, long-distance service faltered after cables were cut around the Athens exchange. Logan General Tel has restored outgoing lines by Sunday noon, while hospitals and agencies faced delays. Strachan Denies Campaign Tapes Wiretap Links

President Nixon aide Gordon Strachan testified he was not told of wiretap proposals in the 1972 re election effort. FBI investigators backed his claim that campaign documents were not automatically sent to him. Strachan denied Magruder’s account that he showed him wiretap plans and logs.

Weekend Rains Slash Park Crowds in Hocking County

Weekend rains reduced visitors to Hocking Hills State Park and Lake Logan in Hocking County. At Old Man's Cave Lodge pool only about 400 swimmers were recorded while camping areas and cabins filled. Lake Logan saw about 2,800 visitors with 1,500 swimmers and 120 fishermen among them. A group of Ohio University students entertained 200 to 250 campers, and anglers reported channel catfish bites with shrimp as bait.

Washington Court House Ohio relatives recall Mark Bernard Matson as a quiet, ordinary 16 year old after his body was found cemented inside a Florida torture house. Florida investigators report a girl from Frankfort Kentucky linked to the case and details describe a soundproofed dwelling with torture equipment. His parents traveled to Florida after he went missing from Ocala and later learned his body was being removed from the cement.

Pan Am Jet Crash Kills 76 Persons

A Pan American 707 with 79 aboard crashed into the sea north of Papeete Harbor after takeoff for Los Angeles. Four survived, one a stewardess died in hospital. three bodies recovered. Plane was Pan Am 816 from Auckland with stop in Papeete. Governor Angeli and French official Fould visited scene as search continued.
