U S government data show a six tenths of one percent June rise in consumer prices led by groceries and transportation as inflation quickens in the second quarter. Earnings for about 4 million workers increased to 127.57 dollars weekly, with purchasing power up seven tenths of a percent after taxes and living costs.
Seven non-partisan candidates filed nominating petitions with the Hocking County election board for the November general election. Willard L. Dutcher seeks re election to the Starr Washington school board along with James J. Hixenbaugh who is also seeking election. John Holdsworth and Dutcher’s terms end this year. Robert D. Bowers seeks re election to the Laurelville school board as terms for Bowers Glenner Weaver and Royce Smith expire. Township posts include Ronald B. Johnson Benton Township clerk Gerald Arthur Stevens Benton Twp trustee E Earl Swackhammer Perry Township clerk and Hubert Thompson Salt Creek Two trustee. Filing deadline is 4 p.m. August 4.
Partly cloudy weather with a chance of thundershowers is forecast for Saturday in the Hocking Valley. Temperatures reached 75 at 11 a.m. today, compares with Thursday's high of 86 and an overnight low of 56. A playful verse hints at disguise and sun protection as clues to identify the mystery gal.

The Ohio Senate approved a 222.2 million interim appropriation 29 to 0 to cover state expenses for August. Mrs. Tena Walker Dupler 89 of Enterprise died unexpectedly at home. Born March 25 1882 in Hocking County she was widow of Joseph Walker and Clint Dupler. Survived by two daughters three sons ten grandchildren eight great grandchildren two stepsons a close friend who lived with her for 26 years. Funeral 2 p.m. Monday at Heinlein Funeral Home with burial in Oak Grove Cemetery. calling hours after 7 p.m. Saturday.
The city recreation department hosts a Splash Party at Logan pool from 7 to 10 PM for all ages. The Other Band provides music with swimming dancing and a concession. A $5 prize goes to the biggest splash, judged by Sue Sparks and Dorothy Tucker. A beauty contest is planned. Admission 50 cents. season tickets not honored.
Lynn Hankison 17, daughter of Mr and Mrs Harold Hankison of Laurelville Rt 2, was chosen Miss Volunteer Fireman at the Laurelville centennial. First attendant is Cindy DeLong 15 and second attendant is Holly Spencer 16. Judges included Robert Stevenish of J C Penney and Wanda Lockhart of Eastland Mall.
Mediation efforts aim for a national rail settlement as UTU plans extending strikes to two more lines. C&NW reaches a 42 month contract with UTU, prompting rule changes and a 42 percent pay hike. UTU threatens six more carriers next Friday, while rail suspensions disrupt grain movement and markets.

Viet Cong sappers under heavy barrage assaulted a U.S. military police compound at Tay Ninh base 55 miles northwest of Saigon. Four South Vietnamese perimeter guards were killed and two Vietnamese soldiers plus four American MPs were wounded. The attack damaged four barracks and two U.S. helicopters. two attackers were killed as the mission failed to reach the 18th Infantry Division command post.
