Dick Milne an employee at Sun Glow furniture factory and Industrial League pitcher was struck in the stomach and lower abdomen by a flying piece of lumber this morning. He was treated at a local physician's office and is recovering at home.
Washington July 23 AP Leaders placed the administration wage and hour bill at the top of a congressional agenda that may end early. Senate would debate the measure next week and a 40 hour week and minimum wage up to 40 cents an hour could be set. child labor under 16 would be banned in interstate commerce. The House Labor Committee has not approved a bill but insiders expect passage before adjournment.
Columbus Ohio July 23 AP The Ohio Legislature enacted a new law delaying the full 10 percent penalty on delinquent real estate taxes. Penalties scale to 2 percent for payments within 30 days after settlement, 5 percent within 60 days, and 7 percent within 90 days.
Leroy Bussart, a 35 year old from Columbus, was arrested in Detroit on charges of robbing the Laurelville Post Office. He wants arraignment in a federal court outside Columbus to avoid bringing shame on his family, authorities said yesterday.
AUSTIN Minn July 23 Deputies hunted a man after he fatally shot three Lukes brothers Louis Joe and Anton Jr while they worked in their fields. A 12 year old boy Faye Lukes son of Louis was critically wounded as the attack occurred on the family farm.
Washington July 23 AP outlines eight point program of judicial reform in contrast to the original Court bill. It lists no change in the Supreme Court while proposing lower court judge assignments by the Senior Circuit Judge, direct appeals of constitutional questions to the Supreme Court, and three judge tribunals in lower court decisions.
James McCormick 31 was arrested in Detroit after detectives traced a ride from a Greyhound bus. He is wanted as a suspect in the death of 16 year old Mary Jane Mohan at a Port Huron tourist home. McCormick said he woke to smoke, helped Mohan, then fled with $47 from a safe.
Sheriff L D Hague and Police Chief Curtis Berry said Licking County is virtually free of slot machines and gambling has been stopped. Two Buckeye Lake arcades reportedly removed slot machines that had been a heavy take, and the order bans bingo theater bank nights and merchants bank days.
In Columbus Ohio on July 23 a vice squad drive against gambling resulted in the closing of every known gambling house in the city according to squad members.
Citizens Savings Association seeks court authority to sell the Arcade Building. Judge Phil A. Henderson will hear the application on Aug. 23. Shareholders creditors and interested parties may appear. The filing notes a cash offer of $35,000 for the property.
A fire of undetermined origin yesterday evening damaged Bent Fields home at the rear of the Jadwin property on W Second St My. Fields was away at the time. Neighbors describe burning tar dropping from the roof and several city firemen suffered minor burns. The blaze occurred shortly before 6 PM.
Four year old Robert Laily Jr of Batavia Ohio is reported recovering from a Rocky Mountain spotted fever the first known Midwest case. Dr Sidney Scorse Amelia says the illness resembled meningitis at first and a rash then appeared. Fatality rates are high but the child’s fever has broken. The disease is linked to wood ticks in Montana and was believed carried by a dog that supplied the ticks for testing.
The S. P. Drilling Co of Cleveland sues Agnew Torpedo Co of Zanesville in Cuyahoga county court for 500000 dollars. They allege 100 quarts of dormant nitroglycerine were left in a gas well after two failed blasting attempts, forcing shutins and halting gas production of 560000 cubic feet per day.
John Dyker of Murray City pleaded guilty to illegal possession of intoxicating liquor before Judge Phil A. Henderson. He was fined 100 dollars and costs after officers found whiskey behind a filling station counter and a gallon jug in a rear shed. Dyker admitted selling bootleg whiskey at 10 cents a drink. The judge urged leniency for first offense and warned him not to repeat the crime.
Clifford B. Kling former Marion hardware dealer and Harding sister’s brother left a $3,000 trust fund to the city fire department for purchase of books and magazines. The will was filed for probate today in Marion Ohio.
