R. E. Stevenson of 412 King Street Lancaster, a familiar figure in Hocking and Vinton counties for over 50 years, opened a New Plymouth general merchandise store in 1883 and sold his interest July 1 to partner William M. Gibbons. He served on Lancaster council and remained connected with Fairfield County business ties.
Dayton report states Capt. Don Gentile of Piqua is named in an Army Air Forces inquiry into reported low flying over Columbus last week. Wright Field said the investigation is not complete and no Materiel Command pilot has been identified as involved.
Rome July 21 Big German guns in the hills behind Pisa lobbed harassing fire into Livorno. Fifth Army patrols probed enemy lines north of the Arno for the first time. Allied headquarters said American units were still finding pockets of enemy resistance on the south side of the river, one of the quietest days since the offensive began May 11.
AFL unionists in Toledo Ohio extended the walkout at Toledo Shipbuilding Co for a third day after members voted to keep the stoppage at a meeting held last night amid the ongoing labor dispute.
Chicago Stadium July 21 Henry A Wallace led CIO backed bloc against Senator Harry Truman in a dramatic Democratic vice presidential race. President Roosevelt, announcing postwar aims, said he will not seek office in the usual political sense amid global warfare. He predicted another four years would bring permanent world peace and outlined plans for a postwar organization with military power.

The document faces dissension over race, with critics resisting a white supremacy plank while pledging equal rights for minorities. War Department telegram announced Pvt. Smith of Logan was killed in action in France June 12 while serving with the Fourth Engineers in the first invasion wave. He was 28 and would have turned 29 four days later. He worked at Logan Clay Products before enlisting three years ago and was survived by his wife Micky Owings, his parents, a brother in Hawaii, and three sisters.
A telegram to Mr. and Mrs. Harve Bateman confirms their son Pvt. James David Bateman, a paratrooper with United States forces, was killed in action on June 15 in France during the Normandy invasion. Born and raised in Carbon Hill, he attended Carbon Hill School and was inducted from Hocking County Selective Service two years ago. his last letter reached home on June 5.
Maj. Charles W. Kruck of Canton and Lt. Mary Ellen Kiecle of Groveport were married in a civil ceremony in Rome yesterday and held a church wedding at the English Methodist Church last night.
The Red army struck along the trans Lithuanian rail line seizing Skopishki near Daugavpils and pushing toward Warsaw. They crossed toward the Polish capital while driving toward Lwow, sealing a Nazi stronghold as attacks widened west of the Bug River defenses.

Reported as potentially a rump session, the group planned to meet an hour after today’s convention adjourns in the rooms of former Governor Mike Connor. A committee accused bureaucrats the CIC Political Action Committee and several Communists of guiding Texas Democrats in national politics.
Howard A. Amos, 67, vice president of the Sidney printing and fishing company publishers of the Sidney Daily News, died today from a cerebral hemorrhage in Sidney, Ohio. The longtime local business leader played a key role in the community and the newspaper.
