Alabama Governor George Wallace ends his independent bid and invites Senator Barry Goldwater to pursue a full conservative challenge to President Johnson. Wallace announced his withdrawal on Sunday ending his campaign.
Neutralist troops under Gen Amkha Souk havong captured the north side of Phou Khoutt Hill near Muong Soui while facing stiff Pathet Lao and Viet Minh resistance on the southern slopes. American-supplied T28 bombers aided the initial success as the defense ministry noted the village Na Kho fell nearby.
Congress reconvened to tackle a mountain of major legislation including international aid, antipoverty, and pay reforms. Senate leaders seek to clear Johnson era programs before the Atlantic City convention, while Morse pushes cutbacks in foreign aid.
Ohio state highway patrol investigated three weekend accidents injuring eight people. Alfred Wright 68 of Glouster was hospitalized after a one car crash on Rt 78 near Murray City. In a separate crash on Rt 328 near Union Furnace five were hurt including a teen motorcyclist Stephen Malone 16 and four others. Malone was cited for speed excessive for conditions. A third crash on Rt 33 near Logan involved Janet Sullivan 21 Bremen and caused injuries to Sullivan and others while the car was a total loss.
State liquor officials filed Sunday sales charges against Virgil Shark doing business as the Five Mile Inn south of Logan on Rt. 33. The tavern faces possible suspension of its liquor license when the case is brought before the Liquor Control Commission within the next six weeks, department officials said this morning.
Albert S. Redick 73 of Logan Rt. 1 was found guilty of failing to yield the right of way after a Feb 29 crash at Route 33 and 796 near Rockbridge. He was fined 20 dollars and costs. Passenger Martha Dillon 76 died from head injuries hours after the collision. The case was handled by Judge Vaughn Collins and investigated further by the grand jury.
Dr Samuel Sheppard, free after a federal judge ordered a new hearing, plans to travel to New York for interviews with his new wife Ariane Tebbensonanns. He and attorney F Lee Bailey expect him to remain out of prison while Ohio appeals the release order. They discuss possible non medical work and a Rocky River residence near Cleveland. Bailey predicts no retrial.
Viet Cong forces attacked Cai Be 50 miles southwest of Saigon killing 40 civilians and 12 military defenders. The raid followed a prior assault on a military post 30 miles farther southwest where a large portion of the defense force was captured. The battalion swept through the town burning homes and killing residents in the civilian area.
Harlem erupts in rioting as missiles fly and stores are looted amid a heat wave. Police and residents clash leaving one dead, over 100 injured, and 100 arrests, with officials sealing off areas and gunfire acknowledged by reporters.
Hot weekend weather drew larger crowds to area recreational facilities. Lake Logan boat and concession stand reported one of the busiest days of the summer with steady streams of visitors.

Wayne W. Galvin of the Logan Daily News entered two horses at Scioto Downs Saturday night. Danish Kid won the $1,200 feature with a 2:03.2 time on the half mile track, while Paper Boy finished second to Combat Time in the $9,840 Challenge Stake No. 2 with a 2:54.2 mile.
Senator Strom Thurmond of South Carolina said he would support bombing of Communist supply routes and other facilities in Laos and North Vietnam to win the war. He argued that decisive action would align all efforts toward victory during a television interview on Youth Wants to Know.
WALLOPS ISLAND VA AP The United States demonstrated that small electric ion engines designed for interplanetary flight can operate in space. NASA’s SEAT 1 test launched two engines on a 2,500 mile, near hour flight ending in the Atlantic. One engine ran for 30 minutes, the other suffered a short circuit.
