President Roosevelt plans a different campaign this year dividing his time mainly between Washington and his Hyde Park home. He aims to wage a different approach from prior ends and will balance appearances with governance as July progresses.
Congress debates merging national campaign effort with nonstop session. Senators Vandenberg and George push for busy legislative agenda, while leaders Barkley and McNary avoid major action next week. Roosevelt signals staying near the seat of government as defense programs expand and third term talk persists.
Frank Martin reports the first new corn from his truck patch on Sunday July 14. Ed Staff notes crates of trench shoes in the Hocking County relief office sized 9 1 2 to 12 1 2 E for outside WPA projects. Relief Director Everett Jacoby says shoes help workers avoid blistered feet, though sizes suggest many are tall giants in the county.
George Hooper shows a potato vine with seed pods from Noah Bey farm in Green Township. Spud raisers say seed pods forming on potato vines is extremely unusual, and the displayed vine is described as an excellent example.
The Coakley farm field near the road averaged 18 percent to the acre with 15 acres harvested. Arthur Smith of Maxville, the thresher in charge, said high winds earlier in the year battered much of the grain and reduced gather. The total wheat from the farm reached 322 bushels.
Wiley Rhoades and Don Feather observed a wild duck and six ducklings at Rockbridge basin on Thursday night. Other fowl use the area for nesting and a crane may have been seen nearby. Charles S. Er of Logan Route 2 shows a one pound one ounce potato from the 1940 Hocking County crop at the City News window.
The Merry Makers Quintette and Emu gene Hanner under Mrs. George Hanner plan a fall broadcast on WBNS Columbus. Members invite friends in Logan to suggest selections, with requests sent to Mrs. Hanner at 497 Nesville Avenue or to any quintet member.
Hocking County commissioners met at the Court House in their weekly session. They discussed bills and took under advisement the $250 reward claim filed by Richard Butler for information about the late C. H. Reichley, delaying action to consult other county authorities.
Ralph Nicodemus a 26 year old Columbus resident died when his motorcycle veered into a ditch yesterday AP reports.
Hocking County residents faced another hot day after Friday's 94 degree peak at the state highway barns. The heat expected to push past the summer record, with readings rising to 75 by 7 pm and cooling only to the upper sixties overnight. Fair weather anticipated for Saturday and Sunday, though clouds offered little relief. Farmers welcomed the warmth for threshing and the corn crop, while city residents endured the heat.
The downtown Logan square dance will begin shortly after 9 30 PM Saturday near the Court House. Kenny Frazier and his Ridge Runners provide the music and Fred Evans from Blue Creek Adams County, Ohio, the champion fiddler, will perform. Merchants sponsor the event as a climax to the first week of July clearance sales with bargains to clear fall stocks.
Jan Masaryk, former Czech minister to London, told a Cleveland audience that if Britain falls in a coming blitz, the United States is next on Hitler’s list. He urged strong American aid, but expressed confidence that England will ultimately triumph despite predictions by a Cleveland singer who doubts England’s fate.
Funeral services were held for James Danison 50 a Maxville oil field worker at the Church of the Nazarene on Saturday afternoon after a long illness. Rev C B Clendenen officiated with music by Mrs Clendenen and the Rollins sisters. Burial followed at Friendship cemetery with Roberts Funeral Service in charge and pallbearers listed as D W Miller William Kornmiller William Sauer Walter Shaw George Howdyshell and Sanford McWilliams.
Logan councilmen in a special session approved the 1941 city budget submitted by Mayor Kinser. The general fund rises to 37,862 from 36,549 to fund police service improvements and a city nurse salary. Gasoline street repair drops to 10,920, waterworks falls to 21,658, with other funds largely unchanged. The budget plan estimates funds needed for the upcoming year and then goes to the budget commission.
Rev C B Clendenen has been recalled to serve the Logan church for another year after returning from the district convention in Columbus. Dr Charles A Gibson was reelected district superintendent of Ohio for his fifteenth year. Clendenen plans to return to Columbus Monday for the convention's final week.
James Savely a 39 year old from Coonville was sentenced to the Ohio Penitentiary for embezzlement. In Common Pleas Court Judge Phil A. Henderson noted the prior probation and stated Savely failed to make the required payments to reimburse the miners union treasury. He will be eligible for parole after 10 months.

A mimeographed Logan Chamber of Commerce report for the first six months of 1940 was reviewed by members. It lists activities in Mercantile Industrial Member Service and Community Service, including merchant protections, credit references, food stamp plan support, near closing campaigns, and efforts to attract new industry with numerous leads pursued.
London reports Britain ignored Hitler final peace offer and prepared for the worst air raids. Churchill may speak next Tuesday as Hitler accuses British leaders of misguiding the public. German raids hit southeast and southwest Scotland and England with civilian casualties and several aircraft shot down. Allied bombers strike at Rotterdam Boulogne Le Havre as RAF targets Emden Willemsoord and Harlingen.
Berlin says Nazi air and sea assaults hit harbor facilities, depots, and defenses while sinking a 5,000 ton merchant ship and damaging others. German losses were three planes. British planes shot down total 27. Submarine claims 24,700 tons sunk. Britain raids northern and western Germany. Hitler’s peace offer reception in London deemed rowdyish. next move remains secret.
County Agent James R. Smoot urges 4-H Junior camp attendees to report by 10 A M Saturday. Participants from Hocking County, ages 10 to 14, will depart Logan Court House to Ross Hocking and camp will run through breakfast time Saturday morning July 27 with at least 35 expected to attend.
Akron scene reports a freight train fatally struck 14 year old Thomas Dickson at a street crossing on July 20. Police and witnesses described a sudden tragedy as emergency crews responded to the scene. Investigators will determine the exact circumstances of the incident and whether signals were functioning.
Richard Wyskiver a Daily News carrier in Haydenville was struck by a car driven by Sam Kreider Friday about 5 30. He rode from behind a barn into the road and suffered cuts and bruises treated by a Logan physician. Deputy Nellis Smith investigated.
