Ohio lawmakers were urged to convene a special session to cut the sales tax by 12 million dollars annually, boost old age pensions, and fund the welfare department. Gov. Thomas J. Herbert announced the plan after a Saturday meeting with Republican leaders.
About 500 attended a Saturday night donkey softball game at Logan fairgrounds sponsored by Logan Eagles. Teams Trumanites and Deweyites featured local businessmen. Deweyites won amid dubious scoring. Warren Wilson homered off Mayor Roger W. Friend. A Lady Go Diva Relay Race on donkeyback entertained attendees. Proceeds fund the fairgrounds lighting project.
The Columbus and Southern Ohio Electric Co announced a 4.4 percent rate increase in Columbus and 66 other communities after August 16. Affected towns include Circleville Chillicothe Athens Gallipolis Hillsboro Middleport and Waverly.
The Federal Power Commission reduced Panhandle Eastern Pipeline gas deliveries to Ohio Fuel Gas Co. by 25 million cubic feet daily, effective April 16, to ease a western gas shortage. Toledo must receive gas at Maumee while Columbus Dayton and Cincinnati also benefit, with Michigan cities receiving some supply from Panhandle.
Wellston Ohio prepares for the 34th Jackson County Fair opening tomorrow. The rural show starts Ohio's county fair season with new cattle barn water system baths and a concrete unloading dock. Harness racing is scheduled midweek through Friday as the fair runs through Saturday.
Mrs. Maggie Jane Bell 73 widow of Frank T. Bell died Sunday morning at her son Walter’s Middletown home after a brief illness. Survivors include a daughter Beulah Ricketts of Butte Montana two sisters Ethel Riley of Norwich Ohio and Ida Rarick of Junction City three brothers Charles Spohn of Cardington and William and Harry Spohn of Junction City eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Funeral services set for 2 P M Wednesday at Friendship Methodist Church Middletown with burial in adjoining cemetery by Mills & Brown Funeral Service New Straitsville.
Three motorists were fined by Mayor Roger W. Friend after pleading guilty to traffic offenses. Raymond McBride of Cleveland paid 100 dollars and costs for driving while intoxicated on East Front Street. Paul C. Edwards of Rockbridge and James R. Davis of Logan Route 1 each paid 10 dollars and costs for speeding on U S Route 33 north of Logan. Officers alleged racing on the highway.
Mrs Jack Adams in Huntington says she and husband refuse the $7300 prize from Mutual Broadcasting Three for the Money show because they are exhausted and cannot handle the flood of calls. Adams, a 27 year old cable splice for Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone, was unreachable for comment as neighbors press for money use.
General John J. Pershing lay in state in the Capitol and then Arlington as thousands filed past the casket. President Truman attended ceremonies and the Army planned a major funeral at 2 PM EST, commemorating Pershing’s long service from the southwest campaigns to World War I.
New York July 19 stocks staged a last-ditch late rally that checked a steep drop. Closing prices slid about one dollar to around 12 dollars a share, with some losses trimmed from four dollars by late trading amid continued selling.

Cairo dispatch reports Israel charging Syrian and Iraqi troops with widespread offensive actions in northern Palestine despite UN truce. Israeli report cites heavy artillery on Eingeb Sussita Shaar An e and Zir In Lajjun, with Jewish forces advancing and Arab irregulars attacking from Tarbikha.
Bandleader Spike Jones and singer Helen Grayce married in Beverly Hills. The ceremony at a hotel was quiet with only relatives and close friends present, and Superior Judge Alfred Paonessa officiated. They honeymoon quietly afterwards.
Police identified the victim as Charles M. Ward, 37, found dead in the bedroom of his residence after a two alarm blaze swept the home in Columbus on July 18. The fire's origin and cause were under investigation.

Detective Capt Glenn C Hoffman says police seek 22 year old Ohio Reformatory parolee John Coulter West for questioning in the July 9 slaying of North Side tavern owner Earl C Ambrose. Earlier, Robert M Daniels is also sought. Michigan officers tie the case to a Columbus liquor store robbery and a Flat Rock tourist cabin operator killing on July 10.
A Youngstown pickpocket ignored the U S marshal badge and lifted 108 25 dollars from the pocket of Marshal John Dempsey of Pittsburgh at the bus terminal on Sunday. The thief also took the badge.
Cleveland reports a building contractor James Kratky placed a two story house on an incorrect lot for six weeks. He learned of the error three weeks ago and plans a new foundation on his own lot while Mrs. Roland Englander allows the structure to stay on her property until he can move it. Kratky says he lost money due to the mistake.
In Berlin Western military governors meet for four hours to map a Western Germany government. An American spokesman says the Soviet land blockade was not discussed amid French objections and German counter proposals.
