A Logan daily photo event captured children of all ages at Bell Hall as mothers model their babies for portraits. Despite staged smiles, many youngsters cried or refused, some toddlers leaned toward mischief, and a few even turned off lights or stuck out tongues. The crowd enjoyed the lively display of Logan youth and parental pride.
John F. Nolan 53 a Steubenville attorney and Democratic leader was fatally scalded in a bathtub at the LaSalle Hotel in Chicago while attending the Democratic national convention as a delegate. Ray Miller said an accidental hot water mix caused the slip into the tub. Nolan headed the Jefferson County Democratic organization for 30 years and served as a convention delegate at seven national gatherings. He is survived by his wife Ann and daughter in law Kathleen along with two brothers and two sisters.
Cadiz Ohio reports the death of 19 month old Daniel Brown of Duncanwood who strangled yesterday after falling into a clothsline erected for him. Coroner A B Tubbs notes the child is the son of Mr and Mrs Remus Brown.
Navy battleships moved in close to Guam during a major air and naval assault aimed at reducing the Marianas base. Nimitz said the Sunday bombardment drew no return fire, with destroyers engaging antiaircraft guns as planes spotted targets for the battleships.

A fatal Columbus fire killed Laura Taylor, 69, and James Powell, 59, in a downtown area residence. Firefighters said the blaze started in a bedroom and hallway. the cause remained undetermined as of early today.
Mrs. Alice Drawdy, 21, of Columbus, Ohio, pleaded guilty to kidnapping Michael Alessi, seven month old son of a Detroit war worker, from a local beer parlor. The child was recovered safely in Columbus on July 13.
