Adolf Hitler summoned the Reichstag to hear a government statement and to present what many expect as his last chance offer to Britain. The broadcast noted Hitler would demand Britain submit to Axis terms or face destruction.
Copies of bills from a recent Ohio special session arrived at Clerk Don Feather's office for inspection and distribution while supplies last. Senate Bill 1 allocates 2 million dollars for old age pension payments through the Department of Public Welfare. Senate Bill 2 amends election ballot separation rules and declares an emergency. House Bill 1 modifies cro waged aid for the aged program.
Ohio Civilian Conservation Corps expansion raises camps from 23 to 28 under Director James J. McEntee. New summer units will open in Richland Marion Highland Harrison and Lawrence counties, boosting enrollment to 12 600 youths and 1 404 war veterans with 8 404 in out of state camps. Remaining Ohio workers split among erosion control forestry and metropolitan projects.

An Ohio delegate sparked a brief excitement at the Democratic national convention as Francis W. Durbin of Lima urged a vice presidential nomination from the floor. Durbin derided Chicago press while National Committeeman Charles Sawyer thanked him and then backed Franklin D. Roosevelt down the line for Ohio delegation.
Pauline Shafer and Richard Mowery were named healthiest boy and girl after exams by Health Commissioner Lacock and County Nurse Madlener. Shafer, 18, Logan Route 1, Logan High School 1940, 4-H member with 998 of 1000. Mowery, 17, Logan Route 1, Union Furnace High School senior, 4-H member with 991 of 1000.
Saturday evening in Logan features an outdoor square dance at Main and Market led by Kenny Frazier and the Ridge Runners with caller prompts. Fred Evans, Ohio champ fiddler from Blue Creek, will perform as Logan merchants push a July clearance sale with fall stock arriving and prices slashed to clear.
Wendell L. Willkie said Roosevelt's speech last night was very, very interesting during a Colorado Springs stay. He commented from a hotel couch as he prepared to depart for a farm conference in Denver.
Darrell Mace 35 of Lancaster was arraigned on a shooting with intent to kill charge. He requested time to obtain legal counsel before entering a plea. The incident involves Lenore Brown 29 who was wounded by shotgun fire amid a long clandestine romance with Mace. Prosecutor Lappen and Sheriff Farbearn reported to Cherrington Hospital after questioning. Authorities expect further court action Saturday or Monday once counsel is provided.
In San Ferdinando California Clarence Yount aged 29 and six of his seven children died in a head on collision between two trucks. The Yount vehicle caught fire burning some passengers to death.
In Chicago on July 19, Wallace faced boos and cheers as his name was raised amid Democratic convention buzz. The 52 year old Iowa delegate, seen as Roosevelt’s choice, was nominated amid planning for his campaign focus in key Midwestern and Far Western agricultural states. Charles McNary praised Wallace as a friend of farmers. His acceptance speech was postponed as balloting extended late into the evening.
Cornelius Millicahy, 75, a long-time Summit County Democratic leader and prominent contractor, died late last night at his Akron home.
The Logan Board of Education approves employing a school nurse who would rotate to city health duties after year’s start. City health officials note federal funds would cover part of the nurse and health commissioner salaries. Schools would pay through year end then share costs with the city. Aaron Adcock is rehired to transport Graham District pupils and bids on Logan High School improvements are re-evaluated.
Preliminary counts across 24 central and southeastern Ohio counties reveal only two of 16 cities with populations below 7,500 in 1930 to 1940. Ironton fell 781 to 15,840 and Cambridge dropped 1,149 to 14,980 as flood and industrial losses weighed on growth.
President Roosevelt, speaking by radio to Chicago Democrats, accepts a third term nomination and names Henry A. Wallace as running mate. He vows to campaign little due to danger abroad while urging unity and warning against appeasement of democracies. Wallace secures the nomination amid intense delegate support and a near-unanimous show of backing.
