Strong sentiment grows in the House Ways and Means Committee for a middle of the road tax schedule. The plan would keep lower incomes largely untouched while sharply raising taxes on very high earners, with the top rate hitting 75 percent on income over ten million dollars.
Joseph J. Somerville, executive secretary of Y M C A men from Portsmouth Virginia, will become dean of men at Ohio Wesleyan University starting September 1. He is a DePauw University graduate and will succeed William L Sanders who resigned to pursue business interests.
The Senate debates a compromise provision in the AAA bill barring tax recovery suits. A lobby committee continues its inquiry into the anti utility bill fight while the military committee investigates war department business affairs. Yesterday the house defeated export debenture and rayon tax amendments to the AAA bill and heard holding company agents admit destroying records.
In Buffs, Iowa two mobs attacked a street car barn derailing a tram and burning cars injuring William Warden 28. Mayor Hugh Finerty warned martial law and no police protection for nonstrikers resuming service amid a three month strike with union leaders urging peace.
Alex O N ail of Happy Hollow near Nelsonville was pinned to a coal car by a slate fall at 9 30 this morning fracturing his right leg dislocating his left hip and suffering a deep facial cut plus minor cuts. Carl Bircher and William Altman rescued him and he was taken to Cherrington hospital where his condition is reported satisfactory.
Columbus Ohio July 19 AP The Sherrill government survey committee told Gov Davey the telephone system must be overhauled and changes should affect mail and messenger service. It argues savings of 1300 yearly by merging liquor control and motor vehicle switchboards and 4000 more by centralizing a state capitol switchboard or linking to the state office building system.
Chicago July 19 The Woman in Red Anna Sage daughter Polly Hamilton describe Dillinger as a criminal who read news accounts of his crimes. Sage recounts the night Dillinger walked from the Biograph theatre with Hamilton and was killed by federal agents. Continued on Page 2.
A severe hail and rain storm struck northern Fairfield County including Lancaster on July 19, damaging crops and flooding homes. Livestock drowned as streams spilled over banks, billboards fell, roads closed, and the Methodist Episcopal Church yard in Pickerington filled four feet with water, used by children as a swimming pool.
Reports from Addis Ababa say general mobilization appears imminent after Emperor Haile Selassie's call for freedom over conquest. About 14 000 supporters joined the patriot group Amor Pour La Patrie amid public resolve. Unconfirmed frontier incidents were noted as Ethiopia rejects any mandate or protectorate.
Columbus report details the death of W. Guilford Reynolds, 33, in a head on collision with a taxicab. Reynolds suffered a skull fracture and internal injuries in the July 19 crash.

David Wahl, 45, of Cleveland, suffered two finger injuries when his hand was pulled into a pulley while moving hay at the Lebanon state prison honor camp. Wahl was serving a 10 to 25 year sentence for robbery, imposed on June 17, 1930.
Two well dressed men and a third in a maroon coupe robbed Oberlin College's administration office taking $1200. Four employees were forced into a vault and held about ten minutes until the getaway car sped north between Elyria and Lorain. One man wore dark, the other light suit. Sheriff Clarence W. Dick pursued the case.
Five masked men held up a Chester bank branch and escaped with 48000 after covering employees and customers with guns. They looted the cashier’s cage and fled by car. The bank handles payroll for several nearby plants in Chester and Marcus Hook, timed before payroll shipments. The branch sits in an industrial district.
Magnus Von Levetzow resigned today as Berlin police president amid accusations he failed to chase Jews out of Berlin or confine them to the Ghetto. His post was filled by Count Von Heldorf, described as violently antisemitic.

Merciless plea by Merton Ward Goodrich ends a high profile case. He admits killing 11 year old Lillian Gallagher in Detroit area last September 20 and is sentenced to life imprisonment at hard labor in Marquette Michigan. The court rejected insanity defense and ordered immediate imprisonment.
Ralph Craig 20 of Buchtel and John Andrews 18 of Pittsburgh Hollow were confined in Hocking County jail after breaking into Leroy Hamilton’s Route 75 home yesterday. Hamilton found a revolver, pipe, tobacco, and a pen-knife missing. Craig was captured and Andrews nabbed nearby after deputies pursued from the scene. Both boys claimed they had been staying with friends near New Straitsville and were en route to relatives on Route 75. Andrews recently released from Boys Industrial, Lancaster.
