North Korean infantry divisions backed by artillery pressed toward Taejon forcing American forces to abandon the airfield three miles north of the city. Taejon, once the provisional capital, was largely deserted as U N and South Korean units withdraw to rugged country south and east of Kum River. General MacArthur indicated the loss would not halt allied aims and noted renewed American defense on higher ground along the Kum River.
