Ohio's 98th General Assembly wraps after 28 weeks with roughly 307 measures passed and a budget near 647 million dollars approved. Governor Lausche gains funds for welfare and school programs while debates over local aid and a liquor tax tweak shape the last-day drama.
Senator Robert A. Taft warned in a radio address from Columbus that President Truman's large government spending would push the United States toward a totalitarian state. He urged 10 percent cuts across Washington bureaus and cautioned that higher taxes threaten prosperity.
U.S. senators debate further trimming the military budget after a 1.01 billion dollar cut by the appropriations committee. Senator Ferguson asks to add 821 million. Senator Thomas proposes a 600 million saving of the total 15.9 billion House-approved figure, with most cuts hitting the Air Forces.
County Auditor Harry Smith announced a second advanced distribution of 1949 motor vehicle license funds to Hocking County and its communities. The total $16,491.60 was split with Logan $2,330, Laurelville $200, Murray City $139.25, and the county share $13,822.35. Checks were mailed to qualifying subdivisions. The funds support street and road maintenance.

Employment fell 2 percent from April, man-hours and payrolls dropped modestly, yet average weekly earnings increased 2 percent. Construction payrolls rose 11 percent and hours 12 percent with earnings up 6 percent, though overall construction levels lagged a year earlier.
The Czech communist regime moves to sever ties between church leaders and lay Catholics. A party circular calls for harsh measures against the Roman Catholic Church as Archbishop Beran faces state treason accusations. Excommunication is described as automatic and moral, not needing enforcement.
Procter and Gamble announced about five percent cuts in wholesale prices for its main soap products and Crisco vegetable shortening. The reductions take effect immediately in Cincinnati.
Washington July 16 The Army suspended Maj. Gen. Alden H Waitt chief of the Chemical Corps and Maj. Gen. Herman Feldman amid investigations of alleged influence in the award of Army contracts.
Alexander Fell Whitney, 76, longtime fiery leader of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and a national figure in labor circles, died at his Bay Village home after a day at the office. Whitney, a Roosevelt ally who later clashed with Truman, had served on national committees and on the U S delegation to the 1936 Buenos Aires peace conference. Born to a Methodist minister, he grew up in Cedar Falls Iowa and began work as a candy butcher on the Illinois Central in the late 1880s.
A three member presidential fact finding panel was appointed by President Truman to decide on a possible fourth round of postwar steel wage increases. Chairman Carroll R. Daugherty, with Judge Samuel I. Rosenman and David L. Cole, will hear the steel industry dispute amid fears of a shutdown.
Milwaukee reports the CIO United Auto Workers mobilized a $10,000,000 strike weapon after their 12th convention. Union reps from 106,000 Ford workers gathered as the union shifted from talks to a threatened strike against Ford.
State liquor agents with high officials raided the Mounds Club near Painesville Ohio and closed it for fire code violations. The raid followed a prior weekend action with no arrests and reported odor of liquor in the kitchen. Governor Lausche urged permanent closure and departments pledged action.
A Friday meeting in the courthouse auditorium drew 25 attendees from Fairfield Pickaway Gallia Meigs Vinton and Hocking counties. Miss Eva Kinsey of Columbus demonstrated methods for planning and giving demonstrations, with follow up student and advisor activities then held. A picnic lunch at Rachelmacher Park bridged morning and afternoon sessions. Four hundred candidates from twelve counties will receive the sixth degree at a state Grange meeting in Athens on Friday August 12. The Southeastern Ohio Grange district will be represented with Hocking Athens Gallia Meigs Perry Vinton Morgan Washington Jackson Lawrence Pike and Ross among counties. August 1 is the deadline for Grangemasters to notify county deputies of each Grange’s candidate count. Clarence Skinner county deputy said a class from Hocking County will receive the degree and many county Grange members who had it before are expected to attend.
A kerosene soaked sawdust cleaning blaze at 7 A M caused no damage at the W and H Chevrolet garage on West Second Street. City firemen extinguished the fire on the concrete floor with chemicals.
Rep. L. P. Mooney led a slate of appropriations approved by the 98th Ohio General Assembly. Funds totaling 32 500 for Lake Logan development, 191 000 to complete Lake Hope lodge and cabins, 750 000 to build inns lodges and cabins, and 31 000 for ten more forest fire towers passed. The measures, tied to state conservation, may be managed by a unified department and involve both public and private operation options. Senator Stanley Mechem supported the effort for southeastern Ohio.
New York City's bus network, already crippled, may see a wider strike next week. The CIO Transport Workers Union plans for extension to lines serving about 1.8 million additional riders, potentially halting 106 routes and affecting nearly 3 million riders daily.
A British Hastings airlift aircraft crashed and burned during takeoff from Tegel Airfield in Berlin today, killing five crew members. Berlin airport officials reported the fatalities and described the crash as a high profile airlift incident.
