In Pittsfield Illinois authorities released a signed 11 page statement by Rev C E Newton aged 51 admitting he struck his friend Mrs Dennis Kelly with a hammer during a quarrel after she left her husband. He said she insisted on going to California and described dragging the body to the Mississippi and pushing it from the Mark Twain bridge near Hannibal Missouri.
