Last rites were held for Conrad H. Reichley known as Hocking County's Santa Claus. His badly decomposed body was found at the foot of a 40 foot cliff near the Ed Shaw residence, prompting a homicide investigation.
Congressional debate centers on James Wadsworth's co authored compulsory military training bill as General Marshall urges selective universal service spanning ages 18 to 65. The hearing follows high level discussions on national defense policy amid wartime concerns.
In Chicago a group of distinguished New Dealers and intimate Roosevelt friends, led by Commerce Secretary Harry Hopkins, works out plans for a third term nomination. The circle remains completely divorced from the Democratic national committee.

Associated Press reports a grim weekend in Ohio with 19 deaths from various accidents. A 26 year old Charles Rentz and 19 year old Walter Ludwig died in a cabin plane crash near Cincinnati after a 200 foot plunge. A dual control plane near Toledo pancaked 500 feet into a cornfield killing William A Geroe Jr 25 and injuring Paul S Hueter. Akron area saw four more fatal injuries while a stock car derby near Newark sent three women spectators to hospital.
Caroline Stewart Woodruff aged 75 died Sunday morning at 8 at her son Joe Woodruff’s residence 176 South Orchard Street after a long illness. Funeral services scheduled for Wednesday at 2 P M at the Church of the Nazarene.
Robert Wadlow known as the world’s tallest man at 8 feet 9% inches died in Manistee Michigan after a foot infection worsened. He had weighed 491 pounds at his last appearance and suffered a high fever despite a blood transfusion and surgery. His height stemmed from over activity of the pituitary gland and he was sponsored by a shoe company with his father Harold Wadlow handling management.
British defenses tighten as Churchill outlines a two year defensive war with a 1942 counter-offensive and 2.5 million troops on alert. Britons report nightly air raids over Dover as Haifa and Moyale battles unfold, while Italy claims British losses and Japan hints at shipping bans.
Logan Grade School band will perform Thursday at 7 PM in Worthington Park downtown. Band Boosters will sell ice cream and cake with proceeds to reduce the club treasury deficit after funding the Logan High School band trip to the Van Wert Peony Festival earlier this year.

Havana July 15 AP Batista former sergeant and head of Cuba's armed forces appears to have won the presidency with a three to two margin over Ramon Grau San Martin amid scattered violence that killed four. The 39 year old peasant born leader will take office October 1 for a four year term and cannot succeed himself.
President Roosevelt began a history making week amid expected renomination by the Democratic party. He remained publicly silent on a 1940 run while returning to Washington after a weekend Potomac River cruise with advisor Justice Samuel I. Rosenman of New York.
The Joseph Seep purchasing agency of South Penn Oil announces a third 25 cent per barrel price cut in Pennsylvania crude since May 21. Quaker State Oil Refining cuts Buckeye crude 25 cents to $1.55.
Police Chief Lew Reynolds resumes duties after a five day absence spent in Atlanta Georgia and Mobile Alabama with Deputy U S Marshal Stanley Sparnon who moved prisoners to federal penitentiaries in the two southern cities.
Charles Sawyer of Cincinnati was named national committeeman from Ohio and Mildred Jaster of Columbus was reelected national committeewoman. The Poulson group said the opposition would quit after delegates wandered from a pledge to back Walter Heer. Cleveland district delegates' reluctance to oppose Sawyer helped finalize the outcome. Delegates present included gubernatorial nominee Martin L. Davey.
War Department officials disclosed that married men in the lower National Guard ranks may resign to avert hardships from mobilizing about 50,000 guardsmen for a year of intensive training. State adjutants general were asked to permit resignations if marrieds refuse ordered extended active duty. The policy excludes higher enlisted ranks where pay covers dependents.
Congressional sources say army ordnance officials tentatively approve a 30 million dollar munitions complex in Southern Ohio. The plan includes a high explosives plant and a shell loading facility, with about 5,000 jobs and 5,000 to 6,000 acres for the loading site, location kept near population centers yet within worker reach. Indiana plans near Charlestown also noted.
Democratic delegates gathered in Chicago for the convention believing Roosevelt would accept renomination. Close friends quoted the president as saying he was not a candidate, while National Chairman James A.
