In Rabat the six leading conspirators in the attempt to overthrow King Hassan II were reportedly shot by firing squad after a summary court martial. Official sources said names would be released later and indicated executions continued with unclear status on all six. The king had promised the leaders would be dead by sundown.
Hassan names eight plotters including Gen Mohamed Medbouh and three other generals who used 1400 cadets to seize Rabat. Medbouh dies, guests including a field marshal and a Belgian ambassador killed, rebels clash with loyal forces for seven hours at Rabat radio stadium. Libyan Kadafi threatens intervention as Hassan occupies the Libyan Embassy in reprisal.
Canton Local 116 of the Utility Workers of America reports a 7 to 3 vote authorizing a strike against Ohio Power Co. The union represents about 1,100 employees at five Ohio and West Virginia plants and divisions in Canton Coshocton Tiffin and Lima. Leadership will coordinate with the national office and federal mediator to resume negotiations.
Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. will raise the price of plastic film and sheeting by 4 to 6 percent effective August 1 due to higher labor raw materials and transportation costs. The firm also increases the pre paid freight allowance minimum to 5 000 pounds from 3 000 pounds.
