HALIFAX July 12 A mystery B-17 bomber forced down by weather at the eastern passage air base last night. The plane reportedly carried 10 passengers and may have Israeli recruits training with Haganah forces in Palestine. Captain S Chandler of New York registered at a Dartmouth hotel and said the flight was a navigational training mission with private flying interests.

Middletown Ohio July 12 Acting judge prepared for the arraignment of Lawrence E Lowe 29 Middletown on a charge of first degree murder in the drowning of Vera Ingram 33. The incident occurred July 5 when a fishing boat overturned. Three brothers Sam Michel 38 Grover 42 Louis Bell 39 attempted a rescue. Lowe said he was not with the woman the day of the drowning. He was taken into custody Friday night.

A 23 year old escapee from the Ohio State Reformatory at Mansfield walked into the Hocking County jail and surrendered to Sheriff Floyd Duffy. Leslie Riffle formerly of Logan had escaped two weeks earlier and wandered about 105 miles to Logan before hiding near Gore and Webb Summit. He described a cat and mouse game with state patrols and said his weapons were just a lighter and handkerchiefs. The surrender followed a long search. he had been paroled for auto theft but was returned to the reformatory for violating parole. Sheriff Duffy noted Riffle was not dangerous and posed no harm to anyone.
