A light hearted feature describes hot New York days driving residents to seek cool relief. Barbara Kineheloe attempts to dodge the heat but is doused by an icy spray from a city hydrant. Her friend flees in camera shy fashion, adding comic mischief to the scene.
The Associated Press reports a heat wave from the western plains to the Atlantic coast caused 335 deaths. Thundershowers brought relief in some areas. temperatures were forecast to rise again. Lightning injured bathers in Chicago as 90 to 100 degree heat persisted along the coast. New York, New Jersey and Connecticut reported high fatality counts.
Amid 90 plus temperatures thousands sought relief as showers promised to ease the heat. The death toll includes 14 Chioans with five dying Sunday two by drowning and seven in traffic accidents.
A freak wind event Saturday evening felled nine trees at Miss Blanche England's farm home, deputy county auditor, near Logan. Seven trees toppled on the knoll above Route 31, another in the yard and a large oak behind the house. A brief south wind shift preceded a return from the north, with rain accompanying the gusts.
A Soviet air crew led by Mikhail Gromoff pushed toward the United States on a bold polar flight. Radio reports said the aircraft remained in good condition and gained speed during the initial legs, passing Archangel latitude by 9:10 AM and leaving Europe behind at noon EST.

Both Ohio houses convened in Columbus to consider a $94,361,874 two-year operating budget for 1937 and 1938. After two weeks of stalemate due to the no new taxes faction, conferees urged quick passage though payroll funds for midmonth may be uncertain. The state had no operating funds since July 1.
George Gershwin, famed composer of jazz infused scores, died yesterday at 38 from a brain tumor after a hurried operation. A Pulitzer winner who rose from a $15 weekly plugger to film scores earning about 250000 yearly, his work bridged jazz and classical music.
Final liquidation of the First Rempel National Bank nears completion after Judge Phil A. Henderson approved the sale of remaining assets to the Ohio Bureau of Credits for 4075 dollars. Unclaimed items are to be turned over to Clerk Don Feather, with permission to destroy bank books and records except receivership files. Depositors have received 57 percent since 1931, and a sixth final dividend is planned. A $50 Liberty Bond found unnamed in the vault is listed for safekeeping.
Albert R. Hedrick 39 of Columbus died early today from injuries after a Friday crash on Route 31 near Carroll. His uncle, also Albert R. Hedrick, died Saturday from injuries suffered in the same accident.
COMM Honolulu July 12 The vast mid Pacific hunt for Amelia Earhart and navigator Frederick Noonan ends as the Navy calls off the effort in the Phoenix Islands sector. The carrier Lexington races south to deploy 63 planes by Tuesday morning. Rear Admiral Orin G. Murfin reports a fruitless search near Howland Island where the pair disappeared July 2 during a 2570 mile flight.

Henry Cotton, British open champion, holds a two up lead over Denny Shute of the United States at halfway in the 72-hole World Championship in Walton Heath. Shute trailed after 31 holes as his driver misfired on holes 32 to 34, but he saved himself from further loss with a 12-foot putt on the final green.

Massillon Ohio July 12 AP two men died from bullet wounds after a clash between police and steel strike protestors near a union headquarters. One hundred forty one people were arrested on suspicion and disorderly conduct as reinforcements arrived.
