National Geographic Society and U S Army Air Corps balloon at Rapid City collapses an hour before takeoff. Five gondola workers jump to safety as 375000 cubic feet of helium escapes. Capt Albert W Stevens, flight commander, offers no explanation and an investigation will follow.
Emanuel Wolfe, veteran county commissioner, was named president of the Hocking county board at the organizing session. W. E. Evans of Carbon Hill was chosen vice-president with Frank St. Clair. Webb Summit took the oath of office, attending his first session. St. Clair succeeds Thomas Vancuren who resigned. Further business included plans to fill the treasurer elect seat left by the late Charles Strum.
Ferdinand Pecora, famed for his role in the stock exchange inquiry, may serve as chief counsel in a government investigation of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company.
The Senate press briefing notes continued debate on AAA related measures while the House began consideration of private bills. The previous day amendments to the AAA bill extending cotton and tobacco control nets were approved. A TVA bill was sent to conference with the House and a $50,000 lobby investigation headed by Senator Black was approved. The Territories committee suspended the Virgin Islands probe after a clash between Ickes and Tydings. The TVA bill passed with administration amendments.

Dayton Ohio July 12 AP H J Berrodin head of the state welfare department division of aid for the aged says he favors amending the old age pension to remove county and civilian control boards he proposes a plan like the industrial and motor vehicles divisions. The state would be divided into 10 or 12 districts with a state representative at each meeting where applications are approved before reaching the main office.
Washington July 12 AP Administration men fear a conflict over private pension plan exemptions may wreck the Roosevelt social security program. Conferees debate Senate amendments to exempt companies and workers in private pension systems while the House delays action.
John Roose Morgan aged 78 longtime chief engineer of Morgan Engineering Co. of Alliance died at his daughter Kathryn Hale’s home in Cuyahoga Falls after a week long battle with pneumonia.
New Orleans see Huey P. Long consolidate power with DA Eugene Stanley’s resignation and Charles Byrne sworn in. Mayor Walmsley loses city patronage as six special legislature sessions strip tax powers and appoint district attorney aides by the Attorney General.
Melvin Purvis head of the Chicago bureau of the FBI resigns from the Justice Department to take on new duties, accepted by J Edgar Hoover. He directed the Dillinger and Floyd searches and remains in Chicago as his plans are disclosed. Purvis built a national profile after leading a relentles hunt that ended Dillinger, with his men credited for the fatal shooting in Chicago.
The Ohio government survey urged efficiency in the State Liquor Department projecting annual savings of $725454.60 and proposed placing the liquor director under civil service with appointment by the board. It also suggested price changes to lower retail liquor prices and criticized the present monopoly system.
Columbus Ohio July 12 AP Attorney General John W Bricker ruled that Ohio law forbids construction of dams on private property except when tied to highway bridge or culvert projects. The decision affects unemployed Vinton County residents seeking water conservation work and counteracts plans by county officials and FERA to build dams.
Albert Dix aged 89, veteran publisher, died in Wooster Ohio. He headed the company behind the Wooster Daily Record and the Ravenna Daily Record.
