Khrushchev seeks to reassure Russians that Stalin era blood purges are over. Moscow announces Malenkov’s move to head a hydroelectric plant in East Kazakhstan, signaling no execution and a shift toward democratic removal. The policy aims to spur voluntary productivity among lower officials and workers.
Agriculture Department officials warn that congressional delay on the soil bank threatens plans to cut the 1958 crop wheat allotments. Field workers need grower signatures to retire part of the wheat allotments as seeding begins in September, while the House has kept the program and the Senate stalls amid a civil rights dispute.
In Marquette Michigan Michael G Carson a 71 year old retired New York engineer departed in a specially equipped boat to row around the Lake Superior shoreline a 2400 mile journey. He said the trek aims to show the world that a fit elderly man should not be discarded.
London Moscow radio stated none of the deposed Kremlin leaders faces persecution and that Georgi Malenkov has been sent to run a hydroelectric plant 1,800 miles from Moscow as proof of democracy. Mrs. Pauline Ames, 43, of Wilmington died when her car left the highway on U. S. 68. Troopers said she was thrown out after crossing guard rails and the vehicle ran over her during the early morning crash, 1.2 miles north of town.
Geneva reports the Aga Khan III died of heart failure at 79 after a long illness. He led Ismaili Muslims, supported charities worldwide, and once presided over the League of Nations. His heir figures were Aly Khan and Prince Sadruddin, amid family plans and public interest.
U S District Judge Burnita S Matthews ordered the bribery trial of James R Hoffa to proceed but granted a mistrial for Miami attorney Herman I Fischbach. The mistrial followed attorney Daniel P Mahers illness as the case halted during cross examination of key witness John Dye Cheasty.
More than 300 Civil Defense personnel from 18 counties will use the Hocking County fairgrounds as a staging area Sunday for the fourth annual national CD test alert. Ohio cities including Columbus and Cincinnati will be involved in simulated nuclear attack drills, with local units reporting by 10 a.m. and support teams joining from police, fire, and rescue services.

Wilbur Dyer 66 of Columbus retired Linden McKinley High School principal died of a heart attack at 2 15 a m at his cabin on Starkey Hollow Road near Ash Cave.
