Columbus Ohio July 8 AP. Between 90 000 and 120 000 Ohioans will receive 2 dollars extra per week in unemployment compensation for idleness from Jan 1 to Feb 23 under a new formula. Administrator H C Atkinson says the plan adds about 1 000 000 dollars total raising the average weekly benefit to 12 dollars. A prior formula was deemed inadequate by Franklin County Common Pleas Court.
Mel Carpenter, former state amateur champion and Twin Rivers pro, shot a blazing 67 to break the course record at Hocking Valley Country Club during an exhibition with Pat Stanton, Herb Vance, Don Coffman, and Red Morgan. Coffman shot 69, Stanton and Vance 76, followed by a luncheon and plans for local team matches at Road links.
In Brockton Massachusetts on July 8 AP reports a New Jersey girl who lost both legs after a bicycle automobile collision adapts to artificial limbs and even learns to dance. Doctors tell her to be brave and she vows I will be brave.
Hocking County endures extreme heat with a record 96 Fahrenheit Friday afternoon. Logan reports no heat prostration yet as residents endure nights outdoors on blankets. Forecasters expect scattered thunderstorms Saturday with little temperature change.
In Cleveland an adult patient received a pioneering cornea transplant from a stillborn child. The July 8 procedure, first of its kind in the city, was performed by a medical team to restore sight in one eye.
Dr Walter E Brehm of Hocking County will address the Burn Ohio Coal Foundation program in Nelsonville Monday night. The meeting aims to show the mining industry's real state and the foundation's plans for improvements. The public is invited. A new union forms as Perry County Burn Ohio Coal Association joins the Ohio Coal Foundation to revive mining in the Hocking Valley and Southeastern Ohio after six months as separate units.

Logan post office gross receipts for the year ending June 30 1939 rose to 24726.40 from 23950.87 the prior year. Money orders issued totalled 25870 for 218690.31 with 2448.91 in fees. Paid money orders were 3332 amounting to 41357.78. Postal savings certificates issued valued at 104460 with 101372 paid to holders and 2474.30 in interest. Certificates on deposit increased by 3088.
GM suspends loans to idle workers amid potential delay in 1940 model start due to a strike by skilled workers. The company had earlier offered an income security path to cover temporary layoffs, while president William S. Knudsen calls the walkout a CIO AFL UAW jurisdictional fight. About six thousand tool and die workers engineers and maintenance staff have walked out across GM plants in Detroit and Pontiac this week.
Delbert Hillman a 28 year old groom who wed the previous Monday accidentally shot and killed himself while hunting yesterday according to Sheriff E. E. Hatfield. The tragedy occurred in Gallipolis Ohio near a hunting site where Hillman was reportedly alone at the time.
A Marion Township reunion brings together past eighty and ninety year old pupils and their 100-year-old former teacher Mrs. Sarah Ann Shaw Sheets. Attendees include Isaac Imboden 81 F J Schaal 83 Amos Blosser 81 and Nannie Palmer 81. Mrs Sheets and Mr Imboden recall a six month term with a man teaching four months and a woman two. The group reflects on school life in a log cabin and the loss of the one room schoolhouse and land deed issues once the building became Marion Grange clubhouse.
Sheriff O'Donnell says Frank Dolezal signed confession to killing Mrs Florentce Polillo, the No 3 torso victim in Cleveland's four year spree. Investigators seek a full, consistent confession while probing possible links to 11 other torso murders and related disposal details along Lake Erie and rubbish heaps.
County Agent James R. Smoot says the 4-H club tour will happen in the latter part of the month and includes a visit to the Institution for Feeble Minded at Orient Ohio. About 200 Hocking County 4-H members are expected to attend the tour and the day’s activities are being finalized.
