Weekend Highway Toll Below Holiday Estimate

An Associated Press survey notes cautious driving kept the July 4 weekend traffic toll below the 410 estimate. Early reports suggested a new high but final counts were expected to be under memorial levels, with 371 deaths in the Memorial Day period and totals around 520 for the 78 hours studied. Drownings and miscellaneous fatalities rose, a Portland fireworks plant blast caused several injuries, and Junction City Kansas reported a six-death car collision.

Ohio Traffic Deaths Drop During 78 Hour Fourth of July Weekend

Ohio recorded 18 highway fatalities in the 78 hour period ending Sunday night, below the predicted 24 and matching the Memorial Day figure. Total deaths from all causes reached 38 over the weekend, with 14 drownings and storms blamed for hazardous driving conditions. Highway Safety Director Gordon Jeffery urged stricter compliance and defensive driving, noting a year to date 12 percent drop from 1957.

Loganite 21 Confesses To Robbery Attempt At Market

A 21-year-old Logan man, William L. Poling of 445 E Front St, confessed to the attempted robbery of Graham's market on E Front St early Saturday. Poling, held by city police, denied knowledge until identification by Harvey Bratton and accumulating evidence. Two Cincinnati men, Robert Jackson and Lemuel Trotter, are to die in Ohio's electric chair at the Ohio Penitentiary after Gov. ONeill refused clemency. Detective Walter Hart was killed during a Sept. 19, 1955 cafe holdup in downtown Cincinnati. this will be the first double execution there since 1947. Warden Ralph Alvis was set to preside.
