President Truman’s midyear economic report will push federal loans to industry for expansion a fully formulated public works plan farm living standards support and broader social security and unemployment pay coverage.
Governor Thomas E. Dewey names John Foster Dulles, longtime foreign affairs adviser, to fill the late Robert Wagner’s seat. Dulles to serve until December 1 with a special election set for November 8 to fill the remainder of Wagner’s term. Wagner resigns June 28 due to ill health as a Democrat and author of the Wagner Act. Dulles has repeatedly served at the United Nations and was cited as a possible secretary of state if Dewey had won. Weather notes report heavy rains and a severe electrical storm in Marion Township and the county’s southern section.
Wheat moved higher in Chicago trading as July futures hit a fresh peak not seen since February and September December futures reached their best levels since January and March. The rally marked the third straight day of sharp gains in active dealing on the Board of Trade.
A 10 year old girl Patricia Ward was struck and killed by a truck while on an errand near a store in Elyria Ohio today.
Five members of the Young Progressive Association were jailed in Youngstown after Police Chief Edward J. Allen cited an unsavory reputation and ties to pool disturbances. Leader Don Rothenberg, from Cleveland, with others also connected to Cleveland addresses. Four remained jailed on suspicion after a car linked to the South Side disturbance drew police scrutiny. Chief Allen vowed to work with the NAACP to prevent similar actions.
Last night showers and thunderstorms brought brief relief from the heat in Logan and Hocking County with moderate rainfall and lower humidity. The Logan area cooled to 68 degrees, but today humidity returned and the temperature rose to 95 by 1 PM, nearly matching Wednesday's 97.
Firefighters from six nearby communities battled a $100000 blaze at the Clarksburg Motor Sales Garage in Ross County. Four hours of effort prevented spreading to a 2000 gallon gasoline tank, which could have exploded and showered the village with flaming gasoline. No injuries were reported. The building collapsed early today and two nearby houses suffered heat damage from burning paint and oil.
Labor unions in Cleveland discuss a candidate to oppose Senator Robert A Taft in next year s re election campaign but have not agreed. Three names receive notable backing Murray D Lincoln of Columbus Thomas A Burke mayor of Cleveland and Joseph T Ferguson state auditor.
A hit skimp accident reported to city police at 8 P M Wednesday involved a collision with a truck driven north on Front Street by 18 year old James E Powers Lancaster Route 4. The left rear wheel of the truck sustained slight damage.
In Columbus on July 7 the Senate discussed limiting party line telephones to ten per line aimed at rural and suburban systems. A related House measure set a five-phone limit. a second bill would create a nine member alcoholism treatment commission with a report due January 1, 1951. The Senate also approved township amusements tax authorizations and three House measures expanding sick leave and board of trade director requirements.
The Navy offered surplus vessels via ads in the Washington Post. Items include an aircraft carrier hulk a converted destroyer two coastal transports one car float three landing craft infantry and one landing craft tanks. Vessels range from Melville Rhode Island to Port Chicago California.
The coroner reports Emmett Counihan, 44, a teamster, died after slipping on his toenail scissors and puncturing his chest above the heart. The accident occurred July 1 in Oakland, California.
A 13 year old Chicago boy admitted then denied involvement in the death of neighbor Thomas Laux. The body was found in a basement sack after an all night search. Charles Munday reportedly claimed the act and then recanted citing nervousness.
About 20 million gallons poured onto a downtown Dayton area after a 94 inch water main burst five feet underground. Thousands faced two hours without water while temperatures stayed above 90 degrees, though the city did not run short. Water director W. W. Morehouse estimated the leak was about one third of normal daily use.

In Athens Ohio a mother testifies for the defense in the trial of 21 year old Harry Dodds charged with murder for the slaying of Eleanor Gifford during an attempted burglary. Mrs. Dodds recalls her son's troubled youth and says she could not teach him right from wrong. The defense notes his Mansfield Reformatory term and questions legality of his arrest as the case moves toward noon recess.
Fred L. Parmellee aged 75, a former Canton Symphony Orchestra member, died yesterday from a self inflicted gunshot. Coroner Edward C. Reno reported.
Wittenberg College announced a legacy from Mrs. Lulu Bayha Lynch of Wheeling West Virginia totaling 5000 dollars, increasing her lifetime gifts to the college to 55000 dollars.
Mrs. Carl W. Zeller of Gibsonburg stated the Buckeye Girls' State board will not send a 16 year old black girl to Girls' Nation in Washington. No election was held this year as part of the policy requiring a citizen vote, and officials cited concerns over racial discrimination and policy limits.
