Comrade George Burke of Logan has received an invitation to the Civil War veterans reunion at the Sandusky Soldiers Home on August 4 5 6. Veterans and attendants are welcome, though Burke at age 93 may not attend due to age and strength considerations.
Robert G Wilson of 32 West Second Street heads a Logan autograph collection begun in June 1938 and numbering 82. He prizes signatures of Vice President Garner Chief Justice Hughes Dr Benes Mayor La Guardia Thomas Mann President Lebrun Jack Dempsey and Mrs Franklin D Roosevelt among many screen and stage stars. Ed Staff notes autograph collecting as an intriguing hobby and wonders how many other readers collect autographs.
In a Mc Arthur stream D Y Milne pulled 15 bass from a seine with one surpassing the ten inch limit. Bass are typically wary in Ohio waters and not easily netted. Milne and partners have caught 31 bass over average size on recent Lake Alma trips.
Four years after builder Chris Gompf created a luxurious martin house with many apartments no birds visited for three years. This year birds began nesting and now the home is jammed with birds vying for the best apartments.
On Wednesday afternoon a frightened crowd fled as a "mad" dog charged along East Main street. Patrolman A F Evans pursued the animal which, tail between its legs, fled ahead of him until it was found not rabid but lost. The dog was safely removed and allowed to continue its search for home.
James Frey of Hocking County holds three teaching posts after graduation season. He has worked at Carbon Hill High School for a year, accepted a position at Murray City High School without resigning, and received a third offer from Union Furnace Board of Education. He is expected to tender his resignation from Carbon Hill.
Charles L. Sherwood state welfare director announced the resignation of A. P. Harsh superintendent of the Boys Industrial School at Lancaster. Effective mid August. Sherwood said no permanent successor is in mind. Harsh is on a two week vacation at Torch Lake, Mich. George Lamb assists.
Harsh, a Logan native and brother of D. E. Harsh, was promoted from assistant superintendent to welfare superintendent on January 16, 1928, under Gov. Vic Donahey. He taught in Hocking County schools and has many local relatives. Major A. M. Buescher preceded him.
Sherwood indicated Lamb may not be named permanently and Harsh will resume charge after a vacation. The welfare director seeks a new warden for Ohio Penitentiary to replace James C. Woodard, who was dismissed but later cleared. Harsh has served 30 years, earning 3 000 dollars yearly, with his wife resigning as matron.
In Cleveland Sheriff O'Donnell questioned a 52-year-old bricklayer as a suspect in the torso slayings case. The man, linked to Edward W. Andrassy and several victims, had been released last August after police identified him as an associate of the killer.
Hazel Strauss a 29 year old school teacher was burned when a skyrocket flew through the open window of her parked car during July 6 celebrations in Cleveland. Authorities believe the rocket was fired from a nearby street by late revelers.
Four top Columbus players will headline a Friday afternoon exhibition at Hocking Valley Country Club starting 2 30 PM. Pat Stanton Mel Carpenter Clyde Knipfer and Joe Coffman will form the visiting foursome with a lunch to follow. Wilbur Lanning announced the free event and Red Morgan arranged the feature.
WPA workers in Coshocton County strike over a new regulation raising monthly hours to 130 with no raise in pay. The walkouts began after the federal relief bill’s rule cut from 50–80 hours to 130 hours monthly while wages held steady.
Britain considers a strongly worded unilateral declaration backed by a military display and heavy aid to allies to deter any coup in Danzig. After cabinet talks a formal statement was expected in Parliament, with Poland and France consulted on wording.
Senator Borah reports widespread dissension in the Senate over extending the session to decide on arms sales to warring nations. He says a large majority wishes to go home, believing neutrality legislation can be settled in the next session.
Everett Jacoby announced that final arrangements for State Auditor Joseph T. Ferguson to attend a Hocking County Democratic Club meeting at the McCarthy Building Thursday night are complete. Committee members are Jacoby chairman Don Feather and Frank St. Clair. All Democrats urged to attend.
Washington reports that extra customs duties were imposed on Italian silk after a Treasury probe found Italy subsidizes exports. Officials said the countervailing duty equals the subsidy and law requires the levy.
The Hocking Parks Committee awarded a contract to William Loomis and Son for ornamental gateways branding Logan as the Gateway to Ohio's Scenic Wonderland. Four brick pillars will anchor entrances at East and West points on U.S. Route 33 with masonry, electrical work, and floodlight boxes included.
Ohio records show 3906 burials of old age pensioners so far this year versus 4850 for all of last year. The five month cost totals 390,715 compared with last year's 485,000 overall.
Joe Barnett aged 48 an electrical contractor died in Huntington after an eight month illness. He was born in Chillicothe Ohio and had lived in Huntington for 26 years.

Morgenthau announced noon resumption as Roosevelt signs the monetary bill amid cross-party shifts and an AG opinion supporting automatic force.
Treasurer Robert N. White announced the office will stay open Saturday afternoons during July to collect June taxes. Tax books will close around July 20, after a one month extension approved by the county board of commissioners.
Logan hosts the Ohio State Fox Hunters Association meeting from October 29 to November 4 drawing over 300 hounds and thousands of spectators. In Bethel Ohio AP report, country doctor William E Thompson turns 104 with a cake on the dining table. He jokes he has not died yet and asks his shoes to be polished for the day while remaining active in giving medical advice despite recent illness. His family history mirrors longevity and loss.
In Baton Rouge on July 6 AP reports possible new indictments in the James Monroe Smith university embezzlement case. Smith, a former university president, remains jailed on a $50 000 bond as New Orleans officials seek custody for alleged loan manipulation totaling about $400 000. District Attorney Byrne says four special assistants may aid in prosecutions anticipated.
Hollywood director Ed Win Carewe, once a top figure of silent films, was reported near death after a heart attack at age 55. The July 6 AP dispatch notes his condition as critical and ongoing.
Heavy rainfall across eastern Kentucky hampered rescue crews as they searched for victims of a mountain flood that swept the Licking and Kentucky rivers valleys. Forty three bodies were recovered with up to 100 still missing. Brethitt and Rowan Counties reported major fatalities and property damage. Looting concerns and the destruction of Mountain Bible Institute buildings added to a toll of at least 70 dead, with potential to rise.
An explosion of gas in the fan house of an abandoned Tower Hill No 1 mine killed four men. An acetylene torch used to remove junk iron allegedly ignited the gas seeping up the shaft, according to George Porter, manager of a nearby community store in Uniontown Pennsylvania.
Professor Robert Newdick, 42, of Columbus and Ohio State University, died early today in a hospital after an emergency operation performed a week earlier. He was a Rap tive of Columbus.
