The Associated Press reports a record toll of 183 deaths in holiday accidents, pushing the national count to 783 nationwide during the four day period. Provisional figures show fatalities across multiple states, with car crashes and fire incidents among the leading causes.
The nation’s first fatality tied to fireworks over the Fourth of July was reported in Mission South Dakota. John Larson, a 55 year old Mission farmer, died while being transported to a hospital after a large fireworks display of an American flag exploded in his face last night.
The 102 hour period ending last midnight saw 482 highway deaths, 178 water fatalities, and 123 other mishaps nationwide. Ohio reported at least 33 violent deaths and 23 traffic losses. President Truman stayed home in Washington as Dulles warned of a costly battle with communism and Churchill urged resolve against possible threats to liberty.

New York July 5 a stray bullet killed 54 year old Bernard Doyle a Fairview New Jersey former fight manager at the Polo Grounds. detectives found shells and a pistol above a nearby building and questioned a 14 year old boy detained for questioning. Police say the shot may have come from as far as half a mile away.

Over an inch of rain has fallen in Hocking County since Monday, exceeding last week’s total. The Hocking River rose, with muddy streams feeding into it. Temperatures fell from 72 at 7:30 A.M. to 69 at noon, with a low of 65 last night.
Thirty eight women were injured when a chartered bus overturned as it returned from a weekend pilgrimage to the Ste Anne de Baupre shrine in Quebec.
