An embarrassed Logan woman accuses three Wellston businessmen and a granddaughter of kidnapping a child she misreads as a relative. A loud-voiced explanation clears the scene, revealing the child was indeed related.
Morehead Kentucky post master W W Crutcher reported at least 38 people drowned when a flash flood struck Morehead early this morning. He noted 11 bodies recovered and aid lines were commandeered for emergency supplies.
Mount Gilead Ohio July 5 AP One man died of burns and another may die after a car gasoline truck crash two miles east of Mount Gilead. Three others were injured. James Bidwell of Columbus died at Mansfield General Hospital after the Sun Oil Co. truck he helped operate overturned and ignited, spraying him and Wayne Pruitt of Columbus with burning gasoline. Pruitt was burned critically.
Bobby Riggs of Chicago and Elwood Cooke of Portland Ore advance to the All England final rounds as Riggs defeats Ferenc Puncee 6 2 3 4 and Cooke ousts Henner Henkel 6 3 4 6 4 4 in straight sets with a varied swing of winners and returns.
The Logan grade school band directed by James Horwell will give a free concert at the meen pool on Wednesday at 7 30 PM.
The four day Independence celebration ended with a high death toll across the nation. Auto accidents topped fireworks deaths, with 277 traffic fatalities and 612 total deaths from various causes. Trains and shootings added dozens more, while Bay City and St. Louis reported notable losses.
The Associated Press reports 44 Ohioans died in holiday incidents over the Fourth of July weekend. Traffic crashes killed 28, 十二 drowned, and four died in falls. In Columbus Ohio on July 5 AP reports twenty children fell ill soon after a picnic supper. Patrolmen Gordon Palmer and Lester Grove said 13 were admitted to a hospital with symptoms not specified.
State Park rangers reported large crowds over the long weekend. Old Man's Cave hosted over 10 000 visitors with 4288 Sunday 776 Monday and 5206 Tuesday. Rock House drew 6460 with campers and Straus reunion attendees from Columbus. No trouble reported and firecracker use was minimal.
The comptroller of the currency issued a call for the condition of all national banks as of close of business Friday June 30 1939. The state banking department also called for a report on the condition of state banks as of June 30.
In Waukegan Illinois crowd of about one thousand fell when wooden bleachers collapsed at a July Fourth pageant and fireworks display. More than fifty people suffered bruises or other injuries as spectators tumbled onto the ground in a tangled mass.
Coroner R B Oliver ruled a suicide in the death of Mrs. Rissie St Clair 60 whose body was found in a creek at Chillicothe Ohio. The verdict was announced today by the coroner.
In Zanesville Ohio Judge L H Tannehill voided 40 divorces due to unpaid court costs affecting at least six persons who had remarried. The six must obtain final decrees and remarry their current partners to legalize the unions.
The Glorious Fourth in Hocking County passed without major accidents. Florence Cullen of Pittsburgh fractured her right leg at Old Man's Cave and was treated at Cherrington Hospital. Minor burns from firecrackers occurred, while Logan doctors reported no serious incidents. Police warned youths and officials debated banning fireworks in Logan and in the county.
The Ohio Supreme Court, in a 6 to 1 decision with Judge Arthur Day dissenting, struck down the State Building Authority created to issue 7.6 million dollars in bonds for welfare institutions. The court held the scheme violated constitutional debt limits and noted the authority was aimed at bypassing bonded indebtedness caps. Counsel for the authority contended it was needed to ease welfare housing problems.
Logan blacksmith E. E. Bright is recovering after suffering fractures of three ribs when he was kicked last week while shoeing a horse.
Ohio Supreme Court ruled that provisional civil service workers dismissed by the Bricker administration must be reinstated unless their jobs were abolished. About 2,000 provisional employees in state departments were dismissed, with reinstatement depending on job status and pending examinations or retirement.
Ronald Beougher seven-year-old son of Mr and Mrs Jesse Beougher of Bowen street was swept into the Hocking River while wading near Rachelmacher Park. Ben Cooper of West Logan plunged into the river, pulled the boy out, and bystanders and Cooper performed artificial respiration. The boy was revived with a pulmotor and taken home for further care. City officials have allowed weeds to grow along the river bank to deter wading.
Raymond Brown of Haydenville charged with driving while intoxicated faced a $100 fine and costs, 10 days in jail, and suspension of driving rights after a collision with Oscar Blum’s car near Logan. Blum’s daughter Helen suffered minor facial lacerations from flying glass. both vehicles were damaged.
A lightning strike during a heavy rain caused a fire at the Marion Livestock Sales Company plant killing nearly 100 head of stock and causing about $30,000 in damage. The blaze occurred last night in Marion, Ohio.

Arrangements completed for the appearance of State Auditor Joseph T. Ferguson at the Hocking County Democratic Club meeting in the McCarthy Building rooms set for Thursday night.
