Groundhog hunt accident injures man in Nelsonville
Wendell Proctor 24 of Nelsonville Route 1 was shot with a .22 rifle by Roger Steinbrick 15 during a groundhog hunt. Proctor, wounded in the chest, was taken to Hocking Valley Hospital in serious condition. Steinbrick was exonerated. Sheriff Waldron urged hunters to identify targets before firing.

A National Guard warrant officer Alexander J. Taras aged 34 was knocked unconscious and fatally injured by two alleged civilian hecklers during a march of 955th Field Artillery Regiment in Brooklyn. Taras died after being taken to a hospital as guardsmen pursued suspects. The incident occurred near Eighth Avenue as troops moved to board a train for Pine Camp New York.

Teen Age Boys Held for Thefts in Hocking County
Four teen age boys, ages 15 to 17, were taken into custody yesterday on charges of stealing automobile accessories. The arrests followed months of investigation by city patrolman Clifford Hopkins and probation officer Jack Kemper. Coal operators in Bridgeport Ohio announced they would ignore John L. Lewis three day work week order. E. W. Lewis of the Ohio Coal Operators' Association said mines would be open four days this week and five days after next week. The UMW chief had called for three days a week after a 10 day vacation ends July 5. The association termed the three day week a violation of the union agreement and anti trust laws.

Reckless Operation Charge Is Denied
Fred Wagner of Thompson Ridge near the Rock House pleaded innocent to charges of reckless operation of a motor vehicle at arraignment before Magistrate S B Whitehart. He was arrested by Deputy Sheriff Lloyd Fraizer on an affidavit filed by Mrs Viola Wagner and bound over to the grand jury. Wagner is held at the Hocking County jail in lieu of a $500 bond.

Rabies Found in Two Thoroughbred Cows
Heads of two thoroughbred Hereford cows owned by J. S. Cox of Logan Route 3 showed rabies infection in a state lab test. Dr. Stansberry and Dr. Radekin examined them on June 26, symptoms noted, heads sent to Columbus and the report returned July 1 to the Hocking County health office. No human contacts were reported and the animal bite source remains undetermined.

Sheriff A J Waldron said a dynamite explosion at Coonville No 2 mine tipple used two sticks of explosives with a 12 foot fuse. The blast lifted coal chute planks and briefly diverted a conveyor switch, but caused limited damage. The Tuesday night blast was discovered Wednesday morning.
