Long awaited rainfall relieved the parched Hocking Valley with Logan reporting .75 inches and Nelsonville 1.48 inches adding to June’s total. The wet spell slows wheat and hay work but boosts corn prospects as cooler temperatures and thundershowers give way to lighter rain overnight and into Wednesday.
Ohio Department of Industrial and Economic Development awarded the Southeastern Ohio Regional Council the Logan Trade Club and Barton A Holl for aiding industrial growth. Gov. DiSalle and Collison commended the group for community progress in Logan with plans discussed for a 1976 national celebration site in Ohio including a 10 000 acre complex with an industrial park and spaceport.
The estate of late Dr. George B. Watson, a Laurelville physician, is appraised at 33058.36 dollars with 12000 for the farm home and 17456.36 for accounts and debts. A tentative home sale is planned, 5000 goes to the hospital, and a public auction will dispose of personal property for charity.
The Senate by unanimous voice vote approved the nomination of William Orrick Jr. of California to serve as deputy undersecretary of state. The action was reported from Washington by AP.

Harold Drake resigns as Logan city schools superintendent to become Strongsville city schools superintendent effective July 31. Strongsville, a fast growing suburb, enrolls about 2700 students with ongoing bond issues for a high school and an elementary. Drake, born in Columbus, previously led Elm Valley and Logan districts and will relocate with his family in late July.
Harry Westfall announced he will remain with the Logan school system as a guidance counselor and will not take the Buchtel York assistant executive head position. He cited lack of Athens County superintendent recommendation and no application through that office as deciding factors.
Mrs Mary Kathryn Krannitz 27 of 739 Warner Ave died at 10 22 am Monday in University Hospital Columbus after a 27 day illness. Survived by husband John J Krannitz a son Michael 7 parents Henry John and Berntine Sparks Haydenville a brother Robert Sparks Nelsonville three sisters Betty McKinley Logan Thomas Collins New Straitsville Darrel Boss Haydenville a great grandmother Caroline Warren Hemlock. Funeral Thursday 9 am St John Catholic Church with Requiem High Mass. Burial Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call Roberts Funeral Home after 7 pm today. Rosary at 7 30 pm Wednesday.
In Berlin, Communist workers under smoke and tear gas began extending the border wall between East and West Berlin. Police observed masonry replacing barbed wire along Falkenseer Chaussee and Seegefelder Weg as East German authorities urged a tougher barrier after Karl Maron’s call.
Local, county, and state offices except law enforcement will be closed for Independence Day. Most businesses shut down, post office windows close, and no mail delivery. Logan Daily News will not publish Wednesday. Holiday festivities planned in Logan Sugar Grove Bremen and Longstreth.

Ohio ended its fiscal year with an unencumbered general fund balance of 3 million and total operations 25 million in the black. Finance Director James H. Malon cited revenues of 1.69 billion and expenditures of 1.665 billion, with a 21 million non-earmarked cash balance and 18 million in outstanding purchase orders. He noted a 54.2 million transfer from the liquor control fund and a lag in revenues after prepaid tax stamps ended, plus a 7 percent rise in state school subsidies to 231 million, reducing the share of school costs paid by the state. The bonded debt dropped 23.4 million to 520 million, as Ohio reduces debt while the nation trends upward.
Senator Harry Byrd of Virginia rejects the U S Chamber of Commerce plan for a substantial income tax cut. He warns it would be inflationary and worsen the federal deficit, estimating a $15 billion shortfall with revenue losses of about $9.5 billion yearly. Senator Williams echoes the attack on tax relief.
City Solicitor James Stilwell told the planning commission that Donahey Development Co. sold a lot in Eastgate in violation of city and state subdivision rules. He noted enforcement gaps, lack of a city engineer, and the need for county help to review transfers and determine plat requirements.
