Cotton, 42, claimed the British Open at Muirfield Scotland after a final round 72 to seal a four stroke lead built on a 66 in the second round. He had previously won in Sandwich England in 1934 and Empee in 1937. Seven Americans were outdistanced as Cotton closed the door on the field.

A Philo and Duncan Falls residents group petitions the common pleas court to compel Ohio Power Co to lessen smoke from the Philo plant. They claim the smoke discolors paint on houses harms shrubs and creates an unpleasant condition. The court took the request under advisement.
A 42 year old elevator operator Ruth Norton was found beaten to death in her Tulsa apartment. Earlier, a 38 year old woman her daughter 13 and a neighbor girl 14 were found savagely beaten in a nearby unit. Police arrested four people including two teenage boys. The attack is described as one of the most brutal in the city.
Harry K Starr 68 of South Mulberry Street died at 12 15 PM from a heart attack. He was found unconscious by his daughter Dr Lethia Starr Boocks. A lifelong Hocking County resident, he was a retired farmer and member of several local lodges and church. He is survived by another daughter Mrs C E Parkin of Charleston WV. Funeral arrangements are pending.
The State Department will assume full responsibility for Voice of America broadcasts starting October 1. NBC and CBS will sever ties with the program, and the department's international broadcasting division will produce all news and commentary itself after the handover.
Gilbert Hutchison, 28, of Circleville Route 4, was killed when his motorcycle struck the rear of an automobile on Route 23 at South Bloomfield yesterday. The accident occurred in Columbus area traffic on July 1.

Liberty Jinks 81 a retired laborer of Laurelville died at 6 10 A M today at University Hospital Columbus after four weeks illness. Born in Adelphi he lived in Laurelville most of his life and was living with his son Harley Jinks. Surviving are three daughters Mrs Ella Welsheimer Kingston Mrs Helen Winters Circleville and Sh Mary Cunningham Victoria California. Funeral arrangements not yet set.
Secretary of the Treasury Snyder announced a true budget surplus for the fiscal year 1948 of 8.419 billion dollars, the largest in history. Congress adjusted the books by moving 3 billion to advance credits for 1949, boosting European Recovery Program funding and masking the year end deficit risk.
Logan and Hocking County residents hauled extra bedcovers as temperatures fell to 50 degrees after a brief cold wave. The day opened with a high of 77 degrees and hovered near 79 by 1 PM as clouds kept the sun behind them and humidity rose.

Clayton Sater 60 died at 1 30 A M today at his home near Enterprise from coronary thrombosis after eight months ill health. A lifelong Hocking County resident and farmer, he previously worked 15 years as an engineer for the old Hocking Valley and C and O railroads. Survived by wife Alice Catherine and brother Jacob. Funeral Sunday at 1 P M in Kline Evangelical United Church Enterprise. Burial in View Cemetery.
Fred Thrush of Washi Township died Friday afternoon at Hocking Valley Hospital after being in serious condition since Thursday. Woodard Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
