Sugar warehouses nationwide run full as sales lag and refineries idle. Raw sugar has dropped from a peak of 64.50 per 100 pounds to lower levels. The C H refinery in San Francisco cut workers for five days, while Amstar’s plant in New Orleans reopened after a week shutdown.
Nine Ohio agriculture spokesmen warned at a Columbus news conference that curtailment of natural gas for agriculture could devastate food production. They criticized PUCO plans to prioritize food processing and cited losses of up to 55 percent in some plants while prices fell on sugar as refineries cut output. Hawaii sugar revenues surged to $740 million in 1974 despite an 8 percent drop in production.
Analysts expect GM to earn no more than 120 million in Q1 1975, Ford to lose 75 to 100 million, Chrysler 25 to 50 million, AMC likely to lose. Combined 1974 profits for the Big Three fall about 65 percent to 1.3 billion, with broader economic moves including wheat export curbs and stock gains.
Representative Ullman urged the Ways and Means Committee to approve a tax cut by next week as President Ford signals flexibility on tax reductions. The dispute centers on who benefits from relief with Ullman opposing relief for high earners while Ford targets rebates up to 1000 dollars for larger incomes. Ohio factory employment fell 2.1 percent from November to December as manufacturing slowdowns spread across all eight Anes regions. Total nonagricultural employment declined 0.7 percent to 4.47 million with unemployment at 6.7 percent.
Ohio lawmakers introduced a no fault auto insurance bill allowing residents to buy the coverage and requiring claims under 1500 dollars to be settled out of court. The measure includes an automatic rate freeze if enacted and has twenty co sponsors from both parties.
E J Valiquette Logan Carborandum plant manager said gas allocation increases would not automatically expand Logan or create 100 to 150 new jobs. If national economics improve, expansion might be considered as before, but current cuts keep Logan facilities already hampered.
The Ohio House approved a $91.3 million surplus allocation for public schools after a partisan floor fight. Governor Rhodes could veto, with Republicans split over earmarks for salaries while Democrats favor per district distribution. Senate action expected next week alongside a separate disaster fund measure aiding Xenia reconstruction.
Charles R. Barry of McDermott wins 300000 in the Ohio lottery Buckeye 300 contest. Emily F. Warren of Shaker Heights takes 30000, with Stephanie Rahne Cleveland Josephine Kelanic Lyndhurst Norbert Heban Rossford Wilma White Columbus earning 15000 minimums. The week’s top numbers were 846 and 225 992. Barry, a retired railway machinist, called it the best moment of his life.
