Slightly warmer weather allowed the Ohio Fuel Gas Co. to build pressure in its mains and tell customers they could light hot water heaters again. The company serving half the state appealed last Monday for utmost gas savings as Ohio’s zero wave intensified.
Logan and Hocking County residents woke to five below zero with a noon reading of twenty above at the state highway garage. The forecast calls for three to five degrees below normal with continued cold through Saturday night, then a warming trend Sunday and Monday. Snow is forecast along Lake Huron and Lake Superior, with light, generally less than 0.3 inch amounts Sunday and Monday.
Officials said only limited relief was possible with gas use conserved for hot water. About 350 communities rely on a fragile system as temperatures plunge. Panhandle Eastern Pipeline and Ohio firms report increased supplies but forecasts warn of more cold. Power commission moves added daily figures to cover residential needs. City of San Francisco derailed in Nebraska at 12 30 A M injuring 25 passengers. All cars and two power units left the track and one unit remained on the rails, Union Pacific spokesman said.
