Hamilton Ohio reports a slaying at a filling station as Patrolman Aaron Laubach is shot dead by a lone bandit during a hold up. Police in Ohio and nearby states conduct a widespread manhunt. The incident follows a string of robberies and details the bandit demands "the dough" before firing and fleeing amid a manhunt.
The biggest of three Birthday Balls in Hocking County benefiting President Roosevelt's infantile paralysis fund will be at Arcade Hall in Logan tonight. Wien's Swing Band plays after two prior events in Murray City and Laurelville. donations and telegraphed greetings add to the county's National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis contribution. Call No 59, Logan, to donate. a solicitor will contact donors.
Senator Bulkley announced that WPA rolls in Ohio will be increased immediately by 12,000 jobs. Howard Hunter of WPA region 4, based in Chicago, informed him the additional positions were set to meet conditions in many Ohio cities, bringing total Ohio WPA employment to 131,000 after a recent 4,000 weekly boost.
LAS LUNAS NEW MEXICO January 28 District Judge Eugene Lujan sentenced 19 year old Ira Gibson Jr to five to seven years in prison to cure his marrying habit. Gibson pleaded guilty to bigamy after admitting he married four women within seven months in what authorities called a shocking series of marriages.
Fred C. Ambrose of Logan was named provisional examiner in the Ohio Tax Commission sales tax division with a yearly salary of 1560 dollars. The appointment takes effect next Tuesday February 1. It is not announced if he will cover Hawkins County, vacant after Ralph Miller’s dismissal. Ambrose previously worked in the local WPA office until last summer.
Gov. Martin L. Davey plans to veto a measure that would force aliens to declare intent to become U.S. citizens to receive state relief. He objects to a board of appeals, publication of relief client names, investigators’ powers, and $10,000 funding. Legislature adjourns until Monday with Feb. 28 as final date, recalling possible Feb. 8 or 9.
In Illinois history two people died in a double execution at the southern Minos state prison. Marie Porter, 37, a St. Louis mother, was executed for hiring the triggerman Angelo Giancola, 22, to kill her brother on his wedding day. Both offered prayers and forgiveness as witnesses watched.
A Japanese military spokesman stated the sentry who slapped U S diplomat John M Allison was only doing his duty and would not be punished. He asserted disobeying orders could be shot and called the apology a gesture of courtesy. The incident occurred as Allison and others resisted a sentry’s halt command near a Japanese barracks path to a courtyard.
Washington reports Japan has failed to honor pledges of non interference in American rights. Secretary Hull cites depredations at Nanking Hangchow Wuhu and other places, including flag desecration and attacks on a missionary compound, despite Tokyo assurances after the Panay incident.
In Toledo three two alarm fires early today killed two people and injured several. R. K. Stewart and Mrs. Dorothy Schaub, both 28, died when an explosion and flames wrecked the Peggy Parcell apartments. Firemen and others were hospitalized after blasts lifted an apartment roof. Earlier fires damaged Holy Rosary church and school and the Arden Hotel building with heavy damages estimated at about 45 000 dollars.

Three major airlines announced that for the next month wives of ticket holding patrons can ride free. Transcontinental and Western Air opened its entire system to women travelers whose husbands hold tickets. American Airlines and United Air Lines limited the offer to their New York to Chicago routes.
Niagara Falls January report describes the collapse of the famous Honeymoon Bridge after a 30 hour ice jam on the Niagara River. Thousands gathered to witness the 200 foot plunge as Ontario hydroelectric facilities shut down. Officials estimate nearly a million dollars in damage. Meteorologist cited bad weather, thin ice on Lake Erie, a January thaw, and a strong river current as factors.
Rural residents of Ohio marked rural church day as farm week closed amid cold blustery weather. Attendance dipped after yesterday’s severe conditions and the 10,000 registrations target set by A. J. Patch of Ohio State University’s extension division faded. Duncan Marshall, former Canadian agriculture minister, urged farmers to master land management and avoid risky cattle breeding unless skilled in cattle merchandising.
Hocking County farmers will meet Monday night January 31 at Logan High School to study rural electrification. Extension engineers I P Blosser and H D Saxton will address the gathering. President Roosevelt asked Congress to authorize vast increases in military spending, proposing an 20 percent rise in the navy building program and a total long range defense expenditure of about 29.2 million dollars for the coming fiscal year. He urged expanding anti-aircraft capability, adding ships and cruisers in 1938, and emphasized defense to deter aggression while seeking arms limitation agreements.
Private advices from Athens say Premier General John Metax has tightened the strong man rule in Greece. The 1939 dictatorship is described as more severe with former parliamentary leaders dissolved in 1986 seized and interned on remote Greek islands.
