Counties oppose Gov. Martin L. Davey’s plan to shift motor vehicle tax revenue to the state highway department and to require county matching funds for a $5,000,000 relief grant. Administrations leaders seek compromises while aiming to reduce subsidies and grant more local responsibility.
In Birmingham Alabama on January 28 an AP report notes a Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Co. miner named George Washington Lied among 209,000 Social Security numbers. L. J. Johnson of Troy Alabama added to the confusion by listing his father as Sunday Morning Johnson.
In Cincinnati Ohio on January 28 an apartment building was evacuated after a basement fire filled the structure with smoke. Assistant Fire Chief Edward Shearwood reported that three tanker trucks accompanied the fire companies to the blaze.
Efforts continued to reopen Rockbridge school after days of closure due to flood conditions. Furnace motors were removed for repairs in Lancaster after water covering the building when the Hocking River flooded the village.
Dayton report says Mrs. Sadie I. Monahan age 78, a former physician from Wellston, died at her daughter’s home in West Milton early today.
The Libbey Owens Ford Glass Co plants settle a strike with a blanket eight-cent hourly raise, restoring normal plate and safety glass production for auto makers including General Motors. Lamination operations expected to return to normal by Monday. Ottawa plant workers had earlier walked out in sympathy with a Pittsburgh Plate Glass strike.
Funeral services for Melvin Lehman 21 of Haydenville will be held at 2 p m Friday at Haydenville Methodist Church with Rev Stukey officiating. He died Wednesday morning of heart trouble. Burial will be at Logan accompanied by Stout's Funeral Service.
William Bush learned this morning of the death yesterday of his brother Theodore Bush 80 at Mt. Alto Jackson County West Virginia. The deceased leaves a wife two sons H E Bush Middleport and Ola Bush Mt Alto and a daughter Mrs Wert Friend of Ripley W Va.
Joseph Painter, counsel for Mrs. Violet Wells Norton, plans a blood test to determine if film star Clark Gable is the father of his client’s 18 year old daughter Gwendolyn Norton. The disclosure follows a January 28 report from Los Angeles.
Four auto union organizers were injured when a taxicab wrecked in Flint Michigan as they were escorted by police after earlier clashes. Deputy Sheriff William Bloom called the incident deliberate. The cab struck a tree while trying to avoid an automobile that pulled into its path. the driver escaped harm.

Wesley Wonn who has been ill at his Third Street home since Monday shows slight improvement after an indigestion attack that threatened pneumonia. He will be 86 on February 13 and is being cared for by his son James.

In Vatican City on January 28 AP reports increasing doses of Valerian drops eased Pope Pius pain and allowed him to continue work. Doctors said the relief is superficial, with no improvement in his fundamental condition, but hoped care might restore some physical comfort.

Eleven year old Jack Smart, son of Dow and Mrs Smart, evacuated with his family from Portsmouth during the flood and moved in with neighbors as water rose three feet in their Haydenville home before being brought back by Red Cross workers.

Davey toured the beleaguered city while City Manager Frank Sheehan said under 1,000 residents remained marooned and many refused evacuation. About 30,000 to 35,000 adapted to makeshift hillside living and over 2,000 refugees were moved by train to Columbus Circleville Chillicothe and Jackson as others prepared to depart.
In Evansville Indiana on January 28 the Ohio River finally pulled back from flood scenes the worst in state history. Rebuilding and rehabilitation challenges replace immediate life saving efforts as widespread devastation is assessed.
