Ohio forecasters warn another cold wave will move east after a brief respite as temperatures dip from teens to single digits overnight. Dayton reached eight degrees while Canton and Youngstown were around ten as the cold snap tightens its grip.
An additional two inches of snow fell in Logan and Mocking County last night. Temperatures dipped to 16 degrees above zero with a rise to 20 by noon. Roads remained slick in spots despite plowing and sanding, as light snow began around 11 P M and stopped about 9 A M.
The Midwest endures a fresh frigid wave from central Canada with 150 cold related deaths reported. Ohio faces zero temperatures and gas pressure warnings from the Ohio Fuel Gas Co. causing closures of theaters lodges schools and churches. Ice blocks Ohio River navigation and barges near Evansville face delays while New York anticipates a fourth snowstorm and record winter totals are tracked.
Lewiston reports the death of Thomas J. Williams a 106 year old Civil War veteran He survived a hip wound from battle after a doctor predicted he would not live long Williams served in the Union army and died yesterday with more than eight decades past since his injury
A three judge court sentenced James Hopkins aged 29 to life imprisonment in Ohio Penitentiary for stabbing Edward Johnson aged 22. The attack occurred in Cleveland and the verdict was delivered yesterday.
Britain pledged to defend the pound’s value amid France’s franc devaluation. Sir Stafford Cripps warned of measures to support the currency without notice, while markets saw a gold share boom and a sharp drop in government securities. European authorities pledged to monitor the French money market closely. France defended the move as preventing economic ruin and unemployment.
Manila reports three fresh earthquakes strike battered Iloilo, bringing total tremors to 53 since Sunday’s devastating temblors. The 15 second shocks, of medium intensity, send residents fleeing as weather officials call them aftershocks and note decreasing strength and frequency.
Floyd J. Green aged 65 died from burns after Jessie Green, 65, died earlier in the same flash fire that swept a Columbus rooming house yesterday. Authorities say both deaths followed the blaze that broke out overnight.
Film actor Allen Jenkins, 47, appeared in Los Angeles court on a drunken driving charge after stating his pet cat Smiley does the driving. He was held six hours and released on 150 dollar bond. trial set for February 16. Jenkins claimed the cat was driving and he was along for the ride.
New Philadelphia report notes retail bread price rose two cents per loaf to 18 cents in most Tuscarawas County stores yesterday. Local grocers cited higher wheat costs and transportation expenses as drivers of the increase.
Senator Taft predicted a GOP Democratic Senate coalition will trim the 6.8 billion dollar first 15 months outlay for European recovery. He urged reducing the total and cited reports that 12 to 18 Democrats may back cuts. Taft called for a single cabinet level administrator and said Brookings favors executive accountability to the President.
In St Clairsville Ohio a full day shift crew reentered the Willow Grove mine despite a previous fatal fire eight years earlier. A night shift of 155 workers was 167 feet underground when a tunnel fire caused smoke in the air shaft, prompting an orderly evacuation as a precaution.
A new Agriculture Department list names 738 traders tied to federal positions in commodity markets since January 1 1946. Among those listed are Frank Pace Jr James Bruce Senator Elmer Thomas Edith Thomas Beth Gage Harry Westphal Walter Salant and family members and officials from the State Department and the President's Council of Economic Advisers. The release follows suspensions of three Agriculture Department employees for suspected speculating in commodities. None of the suspended had inside government buying information.
Perry A. Bond 72 retired postmaster of Little Hocking died suddenly at home after a heart attack. Funeral services will be held there. Survivors include his wife two other daughters three sons and Mrs. Murray of Logan plus Mrs. Murray as his daughter. Bond retired about two years ago after many years as postmaster.
President Truman named a five member emergency board under the Railway Labor Act to investigate a wage dispute involving the nation's railroads and three unions representing about 125 000 operating workers. A February 1 strike threat followed. The board has 30 days to hear and report to the White House before any cooling off period ends. The notice lists carriers and unions including the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers the Brotherhood of Firemen and Enginemen and the Switchmen's Union of North America. ECCLES OUSTED AS HEAD OF RFC, BAYARD McCABE named to chair with Eccles remaining vice chair. Truman pledged Senate confirmation for the new chairman.
Harold E. Stassen campaign headquirters in Cleveland prepare to win delegates from Taft in the May 4 Republican primary. Ohio manager Earl E. Hart says 21 Stassen candidates will contest 10 districts plus one at large, aiming to pull a handful of the 53 Ohio delegates. Taft dismisses the move but acknowledges the challenge. Congressman George Bender predicts no delegates for Stassen.

The House Ways and Means Committee voted 15 to 9 against the Republican tax-cut measure backed by President Truman. The bill would raise personal exemptions to 600 dollars, apply community property rules nationwide, and set rates from 30 percent to 10 percent. Supporters expect a Thursday House vote then a Senate path, with Democrats wary of a veto and Senate reductions.
Rhea Pettit Bangert former Hocking County common pleas judge announced her candidacy for probate judge seeking the Democratic nomination in the May 4 primary. Flames and strong east winds devastated Moclips Washington last night destroying dive businesses and five homes. State patrol radio report said two thirds of the business district razed with fatal damage estimated at a general figure near specified value.
