Pueblo crew blows up coding device aboard ship

County Commission closes old Enterprise River bridge

Hocking County commissioners ordered the old steel bridge over the Hocking River at Enterprise closed to traffic on engineer Clyde O. Underwood’s recommendation. A Somerset firm found deterioration making continued use dangerous. a permanent barricade will be set until further study and repairs. Other bridges across Salt Creek and Laurel Run were noted as extremely dangerous.

Clifford Repeats U S Viet Stand As Bombing Pause Sums

President Johnson's pick for defense secretary Clark Clifford says the United States will not demand a complete halt to North Vietnamese infiltration to end the bombing. He told the Senate Armed Services Committee that the enemy will continue military activity during any pause and that U S forces would be maintained. Johnson's policy envisions a pause if peace talks begin and enemy restraint is observed.

Judge Sentences Laurelville Man to Penitentiary

George Brokaw aged 40 of Laurelville was sent to the Ohio Penitentiary after a suspended sentence was invoked by Judge Harley Meyer. He pled guilty to failing to provide for an illegitimate child and was ordered to pay 10 dollars weekly child support and furnish a 500 dollar bond. He had been arrested January 5 for contempt of court and sentenced Wednesday to the penitentiary.

Ucker Dairy Charged in County Milk Sale Case

James A. Ucker trading as Ucker Bros Dairy faces arraignment in Hocking County Court at 10 a.m. next Tuesday on unlawfully selling milk from December 23 to about December 31, 1967, while the dairy license was revoked by the board of health, per county sanitarian David Mingus.

Hocking School Board Meeting To Resume Monday

The Hocking County school board will meet in continued session Monday to discuss the transfer of the West Hocking school district and appoint a new board member. J Howard Earnhart of Logan Rt 2 submitted his resignation at the Jan 18 meeting after seven years on the board. Earnhart was appointed county commissioner to fill a vacancy created by J Russell Young's resignation.

Rhodes Signs Ohio Redistricting Bill After Graft of Debate

Governor James A. Rhodes signed the congressional redistricting plan after a marathon session. The bill moves Monroe and Noble counties and parts of Muskingum County into the 40th District while shifting Lawrence County to the 6th. The plan aims for districts nearly equal in population ahead of a federal court deadline. Cleveland Democrat Rep. Charles A. Vanik says he will not seek re election to the 21st District and will announce his next move soon.

Plea dates set in Hocking County hospital case

Secret indictments charging John Sappington Sterling Lewis and Libby Lewis with conspiracy to defraud Hocking County were unveiled in Common Pleas Court. Three men indicted by the Hocking grand jury entered pleas on arraignment before Judge Harley Meyer in Common Pleas Court. William Ferguson pleaded guilty to check forgery. Melvin Lee Wood pleaded not guilty to non support of eight children. Robert Hartman pled not guilty to non support of four children with bond set at $500. A fourth man in hospital had arraignment deferred due to service issues.

H Bomb Fragments Found At B52 Crash Site Greenland

U S Air Force says hydrogen bomb fragments were found near the B52 wreckage at Thule Greenland and uncertain whether the other bombs are buried in ice or beneath North Star Bay. Maj Gen Hunziker says debris is left in place to contain contamination and officials will decide on further searches. One crewman died, six survived after the crash on nine foot ice. Capt Frank Hopkins treated for injuries.
