Nation Bids Final Farewell To Former President Johnson

The nation paid tribute to Lyndon B. Johnson in Washington with services at Congress and National City Christian Church. The 64 year old late president lay in state at the Capitol Rotunda as family friends officials and dignitaries gathered for a final farewell before burial in Texas.

Plant Buys Coal on Open Market in Energy Shortage

The Columbus Municipal Light Plant began emergency open market coal purchases. A weekly order for 350 tons was placed with a southeastern Kentucky miner to cover an 800 ton coal stock, due to a 10 percent gas cut by Columbia Gas of Ohio. Restoration to 30 day supply expected by early March.

Viet Cease-Fire Efforts Rise as Both Sides Prep

Reports from Saigon show over 100 Communist attacks in 24 hours with about 600 Vietnamese casualties. The Preble, a U S guided missile frigate, was hit by North Vietnamese fire off Quang Tri. U S aircraft conducted 298 strike sorties and 90 B 52 strikes across South Vietnam.

Logan Trade Club Dinner Honors Gosnell for Service

The annual Logan Trade Club dinner drew 225 attendees at the Logan Armory. Outgoing chairman Robert Gosnell received a plaque from Dr. Thomas Price honoring his terms as director 1967 68 69 president 1970 and chairman 1971 72. New Telephone Cable Completed Along Route 664

General Telephone Co of Ohio announced a 36000 dollar project in the Logan exchange to upgrade service and support growth. Logan commercial manager Michael A. Castaldi said the buried cable north of Logan along Route 664N reduces outages from weather and accidents, serving 7419 phones in 308 square miles across Hocking and Vinton counties.

Ohio Supreme Court to rule on Rhodes candidacy

Former Gov James Rhodes seeks to force Secretary of State Ted W Brown to place his name on the May 1974 primary ballot. Brown rejected Rhodes petitions citing Article 3 Section 2 of the state constitution. Rhodes filed with 2 948 names from 72 counties and a $50 fee. The court action comes amid debate over the two four year terms limit. The issue hinges on whether a former governor may run after a term out. Rhodes secretary aide noted the dispute as the case moves to the high court. The attorney general said Rhodes cannot run, quipping Over my dead body.

Hocking Grand Jury Indicts Six in One Day Session

The Hocking County grand jury met for a one day session and returned six indictments while dismissing three cases after hearing 20 witnesses. Names of the indicted will be released after those freed on bond receive notices. Indictees are to be arraigned before Judge Harley Meyer at 9 a.m. Monday.

Chicago Teachers Reach Agreement on 16 Day Strike

Chicago teachers and the Board of Education announced a tentative agreement after an all-night session. Spokesmen for the Chicago Teachers Union and the board said the deal was reached just after 6 a.m. to end the 16 day strike.
