Heavy flooding along the Hocking River north of the old cement bridge swamps Route 31 and threatens C and O crossings. Water backs toward Gallagher Avenue district while coal cars are positioned on the bridge to shore up foundations. Read more flood pictures on pages 5 and 6.
Flooding along the Hocking River worsened this afternoon with Logan again threatened as snowmelt and heavy rain kept the crest rising. Sugar Grove and nearby towns reported small gains while Rockbridge and Enterprise held steady. City crews and Red Cross aided evacuees as Route 75 and Route 31 remained blocked and state highway workers labored through the night to rescue stranded motorists.
Associated Press dispatches report water scarcity spreading through Cincinnati during flood relief, hindering fire crews at a Walnut Hills four family building blaze. Four men died in a Madisonville coal mine collapse, while a statewide forecast warned the Ohio River could crest above prior records.
Cincinnati 500000 residents face water ration of four hours daily as the Mill Creek district fire, $1,500,000 in damages, and river flooding cut power to a seventh of normal. City Manager Dykstra urged conservation as the city braces for further shortages.
At Portsmouth Ohio emergency relief directors decided to move 5000 flood victims by force if needed to Fort Hayes army barracks in Columbus as the Ohio River flood swelled to over 71 feet. Looters faced police fire amid panicked, waterlogged streets as authorities scrambled aid.
Pomeroy, Meigs County, population 3500, woke to gas and electric outages and threatened food and drinking water shortages as floodwaters inundated the town. Continued on Page 2.
A Daily News reporter joined Sheriff Joe Farbearn and Deputy Nellis Smith on a last minute flood patrol as the Hocking River rose toward Friday’s peak. Starting from Logan, they traversed Route 31 through Rockbridge where half the town flooded and water covered roads.
A motor bus overturned in a canal on the Tamiami Trail about 30 miles west of Miami. A Black porter reported 23 of the 29 passengers were fatally hurt in the accident.
Logan Post No. 78 American Legion and local organizations raised at least 280 toward Hocking County's National Red Cross flood relief quota. They planned to collect food apparel and bedclothing for flood stricken areas. Legionnaires met at post headquarters after a call from Sheriff Roscoe Fowler of Meigs County seeking aid near Pomeroy.
The Hocking county Red Cross called for at least 280 dollars as the county share in a nationwide relief effort for the Ohio River Valley disaster. Rockbridge residents urged aid and began collecting food and clothing for flood areas in southern Ohio.
