The weather report details heavy January snowstorms freezing temperatures and widespread impact from the Rockies to the Pacific Northwest. About 2,100,000 sheep and cattle were snowbound in the Rocky Mountain region while hay drops were planned from Flying Boxcars to aid livestock near Fallon Nevada.
The Lancaster Eagles Club had six slot machines confiscated by the state liquor department led by Anthony Rutowski. Westinghouse researchers announced a perfected light pipe made of Fosterite, a translucent plastic. The rod can be bent or tied in a knot yet transmit light with higher intensity, up to four to five times stronger than air over the same distance. Dr. Richard C. Hitchcock led the design, based on Newton Foster’s plastic for radar insulation.
Firemen saved Mrs. Mary Breen 65 from a burning Kansas City apartment and then rescued her girdle from a trunk at her urging. The girdle contained $2,200 sewed in its lining.
The U S court of appeals affirmed the bribery and conspiracy convictions of former Kentucky representative Andrew J May and brothers Henry and Murray Garsson connected to a wartime munitions ring. In a two to one decision Judges Prettyman and Edgerton upheld the district court verdict. Chief Judge Stephens dissented. Each was sentenced to eight months to two years and remained free on $2000 bonds pending appeal.
The Hocking River and tributaries ran full after steady overnight rains with more than an inch of precipitation. State officials said only one road in Hocking County, State Route 75, was water covered but the water was shallow and traffic flowed. Temperatures rose to about 60 degrees by noon after a frosty early morning.
The lake is about half-full after 24 hours of heavy rain. Water backed up behind the dam and overflow spans several hundred feet in places. By noon the flood extended from the dam to the back road along the north side of the site, blocking two roads across Clear Fork near Leroy Conkle's home. The temporary drainage channel could not keep pace and work on the dam halted due to weather and flood conditions.

A Navy R-4D plane crashed while attempting a landing near Municipal Airport in murky weather. Two crewmen were killed and the pilot Lt. (jg) Louis D. Robinson of Dill Oklahoma was critically injured at St. Vincent's hospital. Victims were James William Murphy 29 Patterson New Jersey chief machinist mate and Charles Adrian Doiron 27 Sulphur Louisiana aviation machinist mate second class. The aircraft based at Glenview Naval Air Station Illinois.

19 year old Gore sailor Junior K Foss pleaded not guilty to manslaughter charges filed after the death of 52 year old George H Schmidt of Vergennes Vermont. Foss was arraigned before Judge Harley Meyer and released on a $1500 cash bond after indictment by the Hocking County grand jury for the November 30 fatal collision on State Route 75 near the General Electric plant.
