Former Defense Secretary Clifford ordered changes to McNamara plans. The Air Force will keep 80 B58 Hustlers, extend three older B52 squadrons, and cut FB111 production from 210 to about 120. Gen. McConnell seeks to retain a dozen older B52s for potential future conventional roles.
Tornadoes ripped across central Mississippi early today killing at least 21 people and injuring more than 100. Hazelhurst suffered the heaviest damage as a half mile wide twister left 10 dead and 15 to 20 homes demolished, with seven killed in Simpson County witnesses reporting. Hospitals in Hazelhurst and Mendenhall were filled and victims were sent to Jackson area hospitals.
A sharp Arctic air outbreak drives snow and sleet across the Plains and Midwest ending a 10 day January thaw. Cold wave warnings cover ten states from Wyoming to Texas and from Iowa to Arkansas while travel advisories span eight states from the Canadian border to Kansas and Arkansas. Blizzards threaten central Plains with blowing and drifting snow.
The USS Command reports 196 American deaths in action in Vietnam the highest weekly toll since mid December. Five of six crew on five shot down planes were rescued. one killed. South Vietnamese and enemy casualties rise with 292 government troops killed and 2 420 enemy troops slain in the seven day period ending Saturday. Small, scattered clashes continue with 97 enemy soldiers killed in the last 24 hours.
County crews halted on the washed out Old Mc Arthur Rd bridge over Clear Creek the day work began due to icy conditions. County Engineer George Mara said personnel were diverted to ice control and road maintenance as thawing worsens road conditions. He had asked state officials to meet on the bridge status. Temporary county repairs will make the crossing passable for school buses. The May flood washed out the bridge, forcing a private crossing and detours for local traffic.
Cmdr Lloyd M Bucher faces possible court martial after a naval court of inquiry found suspicion he violated naval regulations by surrendering the Pueblo to North Korea. He vowed to provide full details of the capture and 11 months in captivity as testimony resumes.
The Ohio Senate considers measures to end wage garnishment and grant $5,000 homestead exemptions for retired homeowners over 65. Charles J. A mentally ill gunman fired at the Kremlin motorcade of cosmonauts Vladimir Shatalov Boris Volynov Yevgeny Khrunov and Alexei Yeliseyev injuring a chauffeur and lightly wounding Georgy Beregovoy.
