Logan County endured a severe snowstorm as heaviest drifts formed on roads and sidewalks after a previous 6 inch accumulation. A 40 mile northwest wind intensified the cold with the thermometer plunging to 24 below, the county’s record low, while relief agencies organized aid.
Joan and Constance Bennett flew to Newark New Jersey to be with their seriously ill father Richard Bennett in hospital. The sisters exited a plane in Newark amid a media spotlight on the family from the movie capital.
Veteran observers noted the thermometer hit a low not seen since the 1918 severe winter when temperatures dropped to 31. The day saw moderating readings by noon though a cold night was expected to follow with possible light sunshine.

In Columbus Ohio on January 23 the state liquor department lost a bid to halt closures of agencies beyond quota. Agency operators Henry P. Mone and D C Westenhaver plan an appeal after Common Pleas Judge John R. King denied an injunction. Bricker had ruled liquor outlets are state stores with a limit of one per 40 000 residents.
