Gunmen hold Brooklyn store as police siege ends in bloodshed
In Williamsburg Brooklyn a siege at John and Al's Sporting Goods ended with a patrolman killed and several wounded. Police used an armored carrier to rescue six officers and 15 customers as gunmen inside refused to surrender amid ongoing fire. Five or more gunmen occupied the store and at least 15 hostages were reported. The slain officer was Stephen Gilroy, 29, eight years on the force.

Heavy fighting in Saigon area as cease-fire looms
In the northwest of Saigon and south of the DMZ the heaviest clashes of the war leave both sides aiming to gain leverage before a cease-fire. Gasoline Tanker Collides In Wrong Lanes On Rt 33
A Logan area man and a Columbus truck driver escaped serious injury after a 9,000 gallon gasoline tanker collided with a car in the southbound lane of Rt 33 one mile north of Rockbridge at 11 20 p m Friday. The tanker driven by George W Walters 53 suffered facial injuries and bruises. Ernest Grey 66 driving the car had a cut lip. Grey was driving in the wrong lane after leaving Rt 180 three miles earlier. The tanker overturned twice and began leaking fuel. fire crews flushed the area and foam was used to prevent ignition. Traffic backed up over two miles until cleared about 5 30 a m with help from Hocking sheriff deputies Logan police and fire units.
