President Lyndon Baines Johnson renewed his oath of office before a large Capitol crowd. The Texan, bareheaded in cold weather, placed his hand on his mother’s Bible and pledged to faithfully execute the office and defend the Constitution as he began his first full term.
Saigon reports Brig. Gen. Nguyen Cao Ky agreed to take a temporary post as minister of youth and sports and join the Huong cabinet after a 24 hour delay. Ky will keep his military role for a couple of weeks while a crisis is averted. Four young generals join five other top leaders in the ceremony at Gia Long palace.
The United States may charge the Soviet Union with violating the limited nuclear test ban after an underground explosion in Central Asia. Fallout was detected in the northern Pacific. the AEC calls the blast accidental but says it technically breached the treaty. Secretary of State Rusk seeks a full Soviet explanation.
Ohio Education Association leader Dowling criticizes State Sen. Ross Pepple for using a release claiming 84 of 88 counties receive over 50 percent of school funds. Dowling calls the figures misleading and argues state aid is well below 30 percent and in decline. He says federal funds are hidden in the proposed 113 million dollar school budget increase.
Petit jurors and witnesses were on hand in Hocking County Common Pleas Court when an Ohio Industrial Commission case was settled before trial. Harry E. Stover of Haydenville sued Elmer A. Keller as administrator of the Bureau of Workmen's Compensation and others, claiming permanent injuries from an accident at Logan Clay Products on February 22, 1960. He sought participation in the workmen's compensation fund after suffering back injuries.
The first new comet of 1965 was announced Tuesday and named Bestor after M. J. Bestor, assistant astronomer at the Mazelspoort Observatory near Bloemfontein. Announcement of the discovery was made by the Central Bureau of Astronomical Telegrams of the International Astronomical Union at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory.
A one story frame Kingdom Hall home of Jehovah Witnesses on Rt. 93 near Scott's Creek Falls was gutted by fire. Fire Chief Robert Courter said the total loss and $8,000 to $10,000 damage were caused by a malfunctioning fuel oil floor furnace. Fire crews from 2:54 p.m. to 9 p.m. battled stubborn flames with extensive smoke complicating the effort.
London AP report says Sir Winston Churchill slept through the night as restlessness eased. A noon medical bulletin noted little to record and promised another update in the evening. It is the 12th bulletin since the stroke last Friday, with Dr Harley Williams reflecting grim prospects.
Extensions to the Smead Manufacturing plant at Rt. 328 east Logan progress is 80 percent complete. Febus Excavation Co. Lancaster, the contractor, reports the water main and sewer line works are well ahead of schedule with completion dates set for 30 days on the sewer line and 60 days on the water line.
Estes is held in a four man county jail cell in El Paso as he awaits transfer to federal prison after bond revocation following a Supreme Court denial of his appeal from a 15 year sentence for mail fraud and conspiracy. His attorney sought to overturn the bond revocation with a telegram to Justice Hugo Black.
The Labor Department will pay a minimum wage of $1.25 per hour to youths employed in Neighborhood Youth Corps projects as part of President John son’s antipoverty program.
The Vatican named Most Rev. John J. Carberry to lead the Columbus Diocese. Carberry, born July 31, 1904 in Brooklyn, previously served as bishop of Lafayette Indiana since 1956. He will succeed Bishop Clarence G. Issenmann who becomes coadjutor bishop of Cleveland February 1.
The Weather Bureau reports warmer than recent nights with last night’s low 18 to 29 degrees above the previous night’s minus 11. Today’s 11 am reading reached 35 degrees as the high yesterday was 30. Fair weather and moderate temperatures are forecast for Thursday.
The cold front triggered light snow in central and northern counties with Cleveland reporting freezing rain. Skies should clear later, and tonight’s temperatures are forecast to dip into the teens and low 20s. Thursday looks mostly fair with moderate temperatures.
The first meeting of the citizens committee appointed to study operation and administration of Hocking County's new hospital will be held Friday January 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the courthouse auditorium.
President Johnson attended an interfaith service at National City Christian Church before his oath. Evangelist Billy Graham urged national rededication to spiritual values. Attendees included Johnson, Mrs Johnson, Humphrey, Cabinet members, governors, and relatives.
The Logan Trade Club will hold its annual dinner and meeting at Brandt's Restaurant at 6 30 p m on Thursday February 4 with a social hour at six. New officers and directors will be installed and the speaker and program will be announced later. Reservations contact Harry Smith secretary.
