Logan Hocking County commissioners approve a half mill operating levy for the health department for the May primary. The levy failed in November, with 4 471 to 3 967 against, prompting cuts and requests for funding restoration from officials and agencies.
Harland Cole Geil aged 77 of Logan Route 4 died at 11 45 a m Thursday at Hocking Valley Community Hospital after four years of ill health. Born March 21 1895 in Hocking County he was a Logan Clay Products Co retiree with 40 years service. He is survived by his wife Hannah Sinitt Geil five sons nine daughters 26 grandchildren a brother and a sister. Funeral services will be 2 p m Monday at Leonard Lyke Funeral Home with Rev Wilburn E Martin officiating burial in Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p m Saturday.
Logan county commissioners heard Beck and West accuse Sheriff Hartman of favoritism as the two service stations claimed they receive no sheriff department business. A debate followed on equal distribution of wrecking and wrecker calls, with commissioners noting a past informal agreement to spread work and urging county officials to share business more evenly.
James Frey, Hocking County auditor, announces the 1973 dog license deadline extended to Monday Jan 22 because Jan 20 falls on a Saturday. Those who bought licenses Monday avoid the penalty as the auditor's office is closed on the original deadline.
Seven people including five children were killed at a Washington home serving as Hanafi Muslims headquarters. Kareem Abdul Jabbar, owner of the house, said the crime was the work of lunatics. Police sought four to eight gunmen seen fleeing the rear. Victims included two women found alive, with some bodies submerged or drowned. The case prompted speculation on motive and identity.

Ohio State University's Marching Band will admit women next fall ending a 94 year history as an all male group. Director Paul Droste announced the 180 member band will become coed before the inaugural Washington parade.
General Telephone Co of Ohio announced a 29500 project to expand the Logan exchange southwest area. Commercial manager Michael A. Castaldi Jr said the work will meet current and future demand, replace parts of existing facilities, and be followed by further installations this fall. The Logan exchange spans 308 square miles in Hocking and Vinton counties and serves 7285 telephones.
In Newark Ohio 82 teachers from the Licking Valley School District staged a work stoppage joining the Licking Valley Education Association. They withheld services as grievances remained unresolved and votes were held earlier today.

Collier 79 a former Fourth District Court of Appeals member who died Tuesday Burial followed in Woodland Cemetery Ironton He was survived by his wife Faye a son James B Collier and a grandson James B Jr both attorneys in Ironton and was predeceased by a son John killed in World War II Collier served as Lawrence County Common Pleas Court judge from 1936 to 1952 and on the Fourth District Court of Appeals from 1952 to 1966 He was a World War I veteran a former Lawrence County prosecuting attorney and a captain in the Ohio National Guard 1929 1936 Arrangements were by Phillips Funeral Home Ironton
