Logan Rotarians heard Dr. John J. Crawley describe the Kachelmacher Memorial Varicose Veins Clinic at Hocking Valley Community Hospital and research at Good Samaritan Hospital. He outlined causes, hereditary factors, clots in deep veins, and the clinic set to expand with Memorial funds.
Labor leaders blast Postmaster General Winton Blount on eve of first labor management talks in 200-year U S mails history. They call his directive to curb contact with congressional offices a gag rule as negotiations for 600 000 postal workers approach.
Lake Logan hosts skaters and ice fishermen amid frigid conditions. Park manager Lloyd Cox notes two weeks of good ice and ongoing derby activity, with Lake Logan famous for a nine pound nine ounce largemouth bass caught last May by Terry Pierce of Marion.
The Logan school board approved submitting a 4,080,000 bond issue for voter approval in the May primary. A resolution to submit an 11.5 mill operating levy was tabled pending a meeting with the Logan Education Association finance committee. The LEA seeks higher millage to fund teacher salaries and benefits.
A 95000 federal grant from the U S Department of Labor supports six months of Operation Mainstream in Hocking Athens and Perry counties under Tri County Community Action Program Director Robert Maurer states county engineers supervise crews and assign work along streams prone to flooding. Fifty workers are employed across the three counties with crews from Athens and Hocking converging at the county line for work toward Deanville Snowfork branch Monday Creek and Murray City to Buchtel. A Tri County CAP board meeting set for 7 30 p m Thursday at the Tri County Vocational School Nelsonville will consider the resignations of director Charles Ennis and president Don Swyers along with a letter opposing Doug Arnett s bid for the director post as he contemplates a 17000 annual salary and another run for Congress. The anonymous letter signed for the poor people of Hocking Athens and Perry counties urges action on funds reaching poor residents.
The Logan Daily News features a special eight page section by the Logan Jaycees the local Junior Chamber of Commerce. The piece praises twenty four years of civic effort in Logan and Hocking County.
South Vietnamese paratroopers with U.S. helicopter gunships raided a suspected POW camp inside Cambodia. The camp, west of Mimot along Highway 7, reportedly held 20 Americans but was found empty. 30 enemy soldiers were captured. The three hour raid was led by Lt. Gen. Do Cao Tri and completed with no casualties.
Official forecast reports five to seven inches of snow in the snowbelt. Clearing and colder air follows with a low near zero to five below and a high in the low 20s for Wednesday. At 11 am the temperature was 14 degrees under sunny skies after an early low of 9 and a Monday high of 24.
A general snow blanket of one to two inches covers most of the state aside from the Cincinnati area. Morning temperatures ranged from five below in Youngstown and Mansfield to 12 above in Cincinnati. By Friday and Saturday a warmup to the 40s and 50s is forecast with much of the snow likely to melt by weekend.
Washington AP reports year 1970 showed a 5 percent price rise and a nearly 0.5 percent GNP decline, first drop since 1958. The Fed cut rates from 5.0 to 5.0 percent, the fourth cut since November, aiming to ease credit as Nixon’s program continues. Real GNP in Q4 1970 fell to $721.3 billion in 1958 dollars, while current-dollar GNP rose to $991 billion aided by inflation.
Nelsonville's Friendly Tavern on W Columbus Street burned in an early morning blaze. Firemen arrived at 2 06 a m to a building owned by the Odd Fellows with the fire starting behind a gas stove in an apartment occupied by Mrs Ellen Nolder. Smoke and steam led to additional calls at 9 45 and 10 50 a m. Two motorists Marsha Conrad and Oliver Bishop Jr were cited for driving over the fire hose and will appear before Mayor Earl Hilleary.
In Chicago AP reports that a contract settlement with International Harvester Co. is expected in a few days. Duane Pat Greathouse UAW regional VP and chief negotiator says talks involve about 41,000 UAW members who struck Harvester plants in 10 states starting January 13.
Washington AP reports union leader Edward J. Carlough objects to Nixon voluntary wage price curbs in construction saying they unfairly target one industry. He and other leaders warn the plan could freeze wages while officials note no Davis-Bacon suspension or new federal limits were proposed.
Reports say U S helicopter gunships assist Laotian ground troops along the Ho Chi Minh Trail in southeastern Laos. Betty Grissom sues North American Rockwell for 10 million over the Apollo 1 fire. San Francisco Bay oil slick from tanker collision may take days to clean. State Dept tightens Ecuador aid amid vessel seizures. Marines confront demonstrators on Culebra Island over naval target practice. Senator Russell in critical condition. Britain mobilizes private delivery as postal strike begins.
The United Auto Workers and Chrysler Corp reach a tentative three year contract covering 110000 production workers in US and Canada. A four day 40 hour week feasibility study may lead to a pilot at two or three plants. Wages expected to rise to 12 000 to 13 000 dollars per year by year three.
Prospective jurors remain to be examined to seat a 12 member panel with two alternates for the Oliver Mills trial in McArthur. Mills is charged with the shotgun slaying of Harold Steele in August in Vinton County. By Monday afternoon 11 jurors were seated with changes for peremptory challenges. one juror was replaced and another had not yet been replaced. Of 25 called, six were excused for health occupation or age reasons and 10 had been examined.
Douglas R. Sheridan 12 of Baltimore Fairfield County died Monday night in Children’s Hospital Columbus from injuries suffered when an automobile crash at the Ohio 37 intersection with a Fairfield County road claimed the lives of his sister Diane 19 and Mary Morrow 74 on January 10.
