Tanker Explodes at Louisiana Dock With 16 Missing

A Cities Service tanker loaded with about 130000 barrels of gasoline kerosene and fuel oil exploded at a Louisiana dock. Firefighters fought flames as officials and crew reported 16 to 20 missing while three bodies were recovered and eight one hospitalized. The ship drifted on Calcasieu River as rescue continued.

Pilot lands without radio during snowstorm at LaGuardia

Airline pilot Robert Francis flew a Northeast Airlines Convair through a Boston departure, losing all electrical systems and with only a compass and a flashlight. He landed safely at LaGuardia with 24 aboard after two hours of darkness and a fuel countdown, passengers calm and praying.

Olin Firm Plans Ohio Valley Aluminum Plant

A spokesman for Olin Mathieson Chemical Corp says the firm will announce the site for its projected aluminum plant in the Ohio Valley within 10 days. The Columbus Dispatch reports the plant is valued at about 94 million and will be located near a yet undisclosed area.

Grand Jury Frees Hedges and 2 Others

Grand jury returned indictments for 12 men and cleared three others after a two day session ending Tuesday afternoon. Robert G. Hartshorn, 26, was charged with second degree murder for allegedly shooting his brother Lloyd Junior Hartshorn on Nov. 29 near Stump Run Rd. Hartshorn faces potential first degree charges. Also indicted were Ralph Canter, Wilbur Clinton Smith, Dale Williams, John Spears, Ray Jackson, Clifford Ash, Harley Crago, Russell Vandagriff, Kenneth Simms, and John Warren Jr. The panel heard 29 witnesses in 15 cases including one secret indictment.

Ten-year-old drives off in switch engine

Ten-year-old Richard Wynn said he wanted to go and climbed into a Pennsylvania Railroad diesel switch engine as crewmen A. J. Frecke and William S. Richards ate nearby. The engine crawled away with the boy at the throttle and was chased about 1,000 feet until it struck a parked locomotive and stopped with no damage.
