South Vietnamese task force seeks to reopen Highway 4 as fighting rages with North Vietnamese at Stung Chhay a key pass 95 miles from Phnom Penh. Casualties reported 41 NVA and five government troops killed with 28 RVN wounded.
A sweeping Arctic air mass chilled the central U S with subzero readings from Montana to Wisconsin while a Pacific storm battered the Northwest with wind rain and snow. Temperatures hovered near freezing in the Ohio Valley as Southeast enjoyed milder January warmth with readings in the upper 70s in Alabama Arkansas and Louisiana.
A large turnout returned for the second weekly session of the Rachelmacher Memorial varicose veins clinic at Hocking Valley Community Hospital. Dr. John J. Crawley leads the clinic and research at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, with Dr. James J. Arbaugh as the first Rachelmacher Fellow under the project.
Sgt. Charles Hutto, 22, of Tallulah La., acquitted of assault with intent to murder in the My Lai attack. Jury of six officers at Ft McPherson found him not guilty after a little over two hours. Hutto planned to leave the Army soon and work in Atlanta.
The Supreme Court struck down two obscure postal obscenity laws but the Postal Service will press criminal charges for mailing obscene matter. Officials say the ruling removes the Postal Service from deciding obscenity while keeping bans on mailing obscene material and unwanted sexually oriented ads. Convictions can carry five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
The Logan Daily News increases carrier delivered subscriptions from 50 to 60 cents per week and motor route deliveries to 2.50 dollars monthly. Mail rates rise two dollars per year effective February 1. Single copies stay at 10 cents.
In Vinton County Common Pleas Court two more jurors were excused this morning in the first degree murder trial of Oliver Mills. With eight jurors tentatively seated, excused were Charles Crow Shirley Buskirk Russell Herrick and Gerald Eberts. A new jury list is expected to be drawn to complete the panel for Mills 60 charged with the Aug 31 shotgun slaying of Vinton Sheriff Harold Steele.
In New York the prime rate cut by a major bank lifted stocks in active trading. By noon the Dow Jones average rose 3.49 points to 846.80, surpassing its previous recovery high of 849.26 set at the close on November 14, 1969.
Hugh Daubenmier of Logan Rt. 4, a 21 year state highway employee, won the Democratic executive committee endorsement for county highway superintendent in Hocking County. Other endorsements include Kenneth Burgess, Dora Jo Ayers, and Mrs. Larry McNichols. A Feb 4 meeting will decide additional endorses for an assistant superintendent. Daubenmier, a Marion Township native and former trustee, would replace Ernest Price and is expected to assume his duties soon, with wife Iza and four daughters named.
Secretary George Romney suspended about 40 percent of the $140 million government mortgage subsidy program amid claims of widespread abuses. HUD will stop approving subsidies on existing homes while continuing payments on 60,000 units. subsidies for new housing remain under review.
Lockheed-Georgia Co renews its lease on the Logan community sub-assembly plant at the east edge of Logan. The five year renewal begins Sept 1 1971 following the 1966 original lease. The plant builds components for the Galaxy C-5 jet transport.
Sen. Robert J. Dole declares he will be the boss as the GOP ratifies his chairmanship following Nixon’s recommendation. Rogers C. Morton exits to become secretary of interior. Evans Jr. and Mrs. Tobin Armstrong named co chairmen of the committee.
Israeli forces 28 miles into Lebanon at Sarafand on the Mediterranean coast killed 10 Arabs and wounded many in a raid carried out by ships and helicopters. Lebanese army reported two guerrillas killed and seven wounded. Six Israelis were hurt as two guerrilla strongpoints and a rocket launcher were destroyed. The raid followed prior guerrilla and border attacks and was cited as retaliation. UN mediator Jarrett awaited Egypt and Jordan reaction in New York.
The first twins for 1971 at Hocking Valley Community Hospital were born early today to Mr and Mrs Ronald Harkless Logan Rt 3. Both girls weighed five pounds four ounces and four pounds respectively. The first was born at Ilacan and the second followed five minutes later.
NEW YORK AP First National City Bank reduced its prime lending rate today to 6.4 per cent from 6.42 per cent making it the first major bank to lower the rate back to six per cent. The rate had been trimmed to six per cent from six and a quarter per cent by other banks last week. The prime rate is the interest charged on loans to the largest and most creditworthy borrowers, primarily corporations.
