Police follow a bloodstain clue from an abandoned car found in Everett as they hunt a killer in the Charles Mattson kidnapping. A John Doe federal warrant targets the abductor. ex convict Fred Orrin Haynes is sought for questioning in California.
Ferdinand J. Elder 32, A and P manager on Market St., killed instantly when his car veered off Route 31 near Ott Iles farm two miles north of Logan after leaving a meeting in Zanesville. Chester Stewart, asleep in the back seat, survived with cuts and bruises. Sheriff Farbearn and Coroner Vance Brian examined the wreck, noting a probable momentary sleep. Elder, a four year Logan resident born in Shawnee, leaves wife Helen and five children. He was active in local Elks and Knights of Columbus and St. John's Church. Funeral arrangements pending.
Arnett Harbage, former state official, threatened legal action to stop payment of a legislative delegation’s expenses for the presidential inauguration as Ohio lawmakers plan adjournment to late January. Both the senate and house intended to send five delegates to Roosevelt events, while dispute over mileage fees from earlier sessions already led to a temporary injunction.

In Mexico City two missing airliners were found wrecked in mountainous terrain. One craft carried pilot Roberto Navarro and two physicians. all three occupants were dead. Local officials in San Cristobal Las Casas confirmed the discovery.
Ogdensburg and Solvay reports detail multiple early morning blazes. In Ogdensburg a small frame house burned, four Petrillia children aged 15, 11, 7 and 3 died. a fireman was seriously injured. In Solvay a three story frame house fire killed Margaret Spillane, 12, and William Spillane Jr, 10, with 14 people left homeless and six firemen injured.
Federal investigators work to remove danger zones from Western Air routes as 11 people survive a crash near Newhall Pass in a snowstorm en route from Salt Lake City. Martin Johnson, famed hunter, and James A. Braden, Cleveland Ink Company president, died in the incident. Mrs. Johnson survives with a fractured knee and concussion.

Miller Taufel, 43, of Newark a state bank examiner was found dead early today on the outskirts of the city with his throat and wrists slashed by a knife. Authorities investigated the scene and searched for a possible motive or assailant.
